How to remove powder coating from Fuchs wheels?

I have a spare 6 x15 wheel that has been powder coated by the PO. I want to redo the finish so it matches my polished wheels. Anyone know what to use or how to do it if I want to do it myself? The alternative is to send it away to have it sandblasted or media blasted, which I would prefer not to do. Anyone been there and done that?

Powdercoating is pretty thick. I wouldn't sand blast. Way too abrasive and media blasting would take forever. The shop I bring all my powdercoating to uses good old fashion paint remover from Home Depot. I've used it myself and works like a charm.

Blau911,

"Been There, Done That".

I did a top end job on a Harley Davidson a few years back, and the jugs (cylinders) and heads (all aluminum) were powder coated, but were done poorly (bubbling at temperature). I contacted a top-rated powder coating company to inquire about removal. Their answer?

Carb cleaner.

I took a can out and, sure enough, it removed the PC with a minimum of elbow grease. I then dipped all the parts in a tank with carb cleaner, and used a high pressure water hose to finish.

This is the biggest reason I cringe a little bit when I see powder coated engine parts.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm,
Reminds me of a set of powder coated wheels on a motorcycle....I was cleaning the brake calipers with some brake cleaner, and compressed air. When I used the air to blow dry the calipers, it blew off complete sections of powder coating from the wheels.
