Chrome Options??
Hello all-
I have a 73 Targa that I am in the process of restoring and had a question about chrome. The chrome on the windows and door handles are completely respectable, but they are starting to show some dots which I can only assume is the rust process taking over?? - Other than taking the parts off and sending them out to be re-chromed, what other options are there to try and restore it and furthermore protect from future damage? Thanks as always! |

Just a question as I'm not familiar with targas. I know the door handles are chrome, but on coupes the window trim is polished aluminum--except for pre-69 cars. Is that the same with the targa or do they have chrome window trim? My thought being, that if the trim is aluminum, polishing would take care of it, except for the door handle.

Good question - there is no frame around the window itself on a Targa just glass that closes against the top Targa seal to prevent water coming in. It does however have a side window (the triangle kind of which the name escapes me) that does appear to me to be chrome...

So you're only talking about the fixed vent window and the handles? Someone with a targa will confirm if the vent frame is aluminum or chrome, and maybe polishing can be a solution.

I had a '73.5 targa and it had chrome vent frames and handles, as well as the door handles. I don't have a solution for the pitting, though, I've seen it on older cars. |

Generally a good cleaning with chrome polish wil help retard further degredation. Believe it or not plain ol' Turtle wax chrome polish applied to a cloth will do wonders.
BTW my '71 vent windows and door handles are chrome. Pics of your situation would help us for reference. |
