Can anyone recommend a header and muffler set-up for about a $1000?

Anyone have any suggestions for a header muffler set-up for under a $1000? My priorities would be lighter weight than stock heat x'ers and muffler, great sound without the highway drone, and if possible, some added low end torque. I currently just have the stock heat exchangers and muffler on an 83 SC engine in a 74 chassis. I am exempt from smog testing here in Texas so that's not a concern, and I don't have a Cat. converter (at least I can't see it if there is). Any suggestions for my particular car would be much appreciated!!

you don't say whether you want heat retained or just straight headers.
Looking for any performance equipment for that price is whatever you can find that is used. A good muffler alone will run $500. You can find new headers (w/o heat) for about $500. If you want heat, you'll probably want SSI's which will also require two new oil lines to make room for the right side exhaust bank.

No heat required nor wanted. That's why I want to go with headers. I nkow it can be done for a $1000. Just looking for someone to point me in the right direction.

You might speak with Ben at M&K and see what can be put together. I would recommend stainless headers. Make sure you know whether you need thick or thin flange styles. Some headers won't need the backdated oil lines from what I've seen done locally by several racers.
The other thing you'll need to get clarification on for your engine, is tube width (1 1/2" or something bigger?) Guys that have 3.0's can give you some feedback with dyno verification.

I have a fairly new B&B setup of headers and muffler. It's on the car now (3.0). There are cans in place for heat, but you can ignore them or cut them off. PM me if interested.
