I am really tired of these fuel problems. I am pretty sure the tiny rust flakes in the tank are the sole problems Ive been having. Anyone know where i can pick up some kind of tank sealer?

Try Tweeks...I think it is called POR 15 or something like that. Have your tank "boiled out" by a local radiator shop first though.

I did not realize por-15 would hold up to the Gas.

Por-15 is just the company name. They make loads of different stuff.
Thier tank sealer has gotten good reviews from the VW bus list and this one. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

I cleaned out and sealed my tank this winter using the POR15 gas tank kit. Comes with all you need to clean the tank and seal it. Was easy to use and so far no problems. I ordered directly from their web site: http://www.por15.com

Bill and Kurt,
How hard was it to remove tank? Which manual or directions did you use? [This message has been edited by joehahn (edited 06-18-2001).] |

Joe on my 72 it is probably one of the easier tasks. Jack up and support front end. Drain tank (best if you drive car till almost empty). Remove fuel lines (mine had two underneath, supply and return. Back on top, disconnect fuel sender wire. Remove vent line. Disconnect fill line. Looking halfway down the sides of the tank you will see a lip. On the two sides and at the front of the car you will see clamps bolting the tank to the pan. Remove clamps (I'm sure Warren will know, but it seems like mine had one on each of the three sides). Lift tank out. If yours is like mine, more than likely the seal under the tank is old and sticky and the tank was hard to move. I used a screwdriver to lift around the edges and then lifted out. With no gas it is probably 20-30 lbs. Have fun.

Since Kurt did such a good job with explaining gas tank removal, I won't have to say much. The only things I have to add are that my gas tank had a shield underneath of it that had to be removed(like 3 or four bolts) first, and that the fuel filler neck has to be disconnected at the rubber type sleeve in the trunk, and also that the sending unit has to be disconnected from the electrical harness. Also, my tank had some clear hoses to release fumes that needed to be disconnected. Bill ------------------ William Armentrout 1973 911T 2.7 carerra rs specs www.geocities.com/william_armentrout |
