high mileage contest

OK, I'm a freak. I check odometers out wherever I go. Mostly I peer into the driver's windows of Mercedes, Volvos, BMWs and the occasional VW. Last month at Lime Rock, I saw a ratty Jetta parked in the camping area and guessed that it would have 320K on it. 316K. Bingo.

My highest spot ever was a Benz in Vienna (Austria) with 500K kilometers.

Now, I'm checking out P-cars. I'm amazed reading about the variety of 200K+ Porsches on the board.

What's the highest mileage you've ever gotten to, or seen, or ridden in/driven?

Odo photos optional but highly encouraged.

My old Jetta with 1.6 NA diesel: 596k kms (re-ring at 490)
Car still drove nicely, and was very reliable. Too loud and rattly for my wife though.

My father's '90 Honda CRX had 280k on it when my youngest brother wrapped it around a phone pole.

That pist me off quite a bit because I had replaced the clutch with a Borg Warner racing series about 70k earlier. I had installed new brakes and did a complete tune up to the car right after I did the clutch. Even with the high miles, that car hauled and nothing major failed on it. The first clutch was spent teaching five kids to driveover seven years. It was a great car but I still prefer my 911.

What's the secret to making these car lasts? I just sold my E36 M3 with 165K miles. The engine still runs perfectly. Just regular maintenances (fluid & plug changes) and A LOT of preventive work with knowledge gained from various BMW forums.

What's your experience?

93 Mazda MX6 V6- 292,000 original engine. Bought with about 270K on it - replaced the original clutch at that point.

Original engine, original valves, guides etc. Guy who bought it balked at the miles real hard, then drove it. When he came back he said "this thing runs GREAT" and paid cash for it.

I believe you because it's first-hand, not "a friend once had," or "I heard of a guy who..."

Any pics? Yours is the winner so far by a long shot.

No, no pictures. I sold it a few years ago after I bought the '84. I was living out of a suitcase and didn't have room for two cars.

NO PROOF!! It must be BS! J/K! That's awesome, but did it have engine and tranny rebuilds? Just curious.

Mine with 203k had the top end redone at 175k and clutches. This summer will be it's first tranny rebuild.

I had to that the tranny and the cam towers rebuilt. The PO had the Carrera tensioners installed too. I had a compression and leakdown check done on it when the canm towers were done. everything was still good. That was done just before I sold it.
