Steering Wheel restoration Question?

Has Anyone ever taken a standard 1969 -- 1973 4 spoke OEM steering wheel and converted it to a wooden steering wheel.

I guess the question is, If I grind off the black plastic off will there be some sort of frame I can replace with wood?

Thanks in advanced
