Red face Battery Reads 14.4 Volts ??

With the Battery removed from the Car it reads 14.5 volts on the Volt Meter. Normal
reading I thought should be 12.2 - 12.4..

Does this indicate a short in the Battery.
Can not start the car with this battery.

What do you mean when you say you cannot start the car with this battery? The car doesn't turn over? Or it cranks but doesn't start?

For starters, I would take the battery to be tested with a hydrometor to determine its internal condition. Once you have that information, you can better lay out a course of testing.

It will not crank over I jump the car and it starts fine. I replaced the battery with the battery from my truck and the car starts and runs fine. The Battery is only 2 years old just thought the reading was high and Indicated a problem with the battery.

Joe, I wonder if your volt meter is accurate? 12 volt batteries are actually a series of cells (six of them) which are 2 volts each. Even if you overcharge a battery a 2 volt cell can't create more than 2 volts. Actually it is slightly more than 2 volts. A new battery generally reads around 12.5 volts. What does your truck battery read with the car off? I suggest you either take the battery to a parts store to be checked or get a hygrometer (looks like an anti-freeze tester, quite inexpensive) and test the cells. Does sound like a bad battery based on the car working with the truck battery. Oh, with the truck battery, you should get a reading with the car running of 13.5-14.5 volts.

I think the Volt meter is fine. The Truck Battery reads 12.4 Volts. I am sure the other battery is bad just curious about the high reading I am getting....

Joe,

It sounds like a fried battery to me! Check your battery Voltage with engine off in your truck and then with engine running ... to check your meter.

12.6-13.2 Volts open circuit (without a load) would be acceptable readings for a fully charged battery ... 2.1-2.2 Volts per cell, but any higher is severely overcharged!

What is your system Voltage with engine running above 2000 rpm in the 911?

Will check the reading when I get home.

I think the battery is bad also just did
not think the Short in the gattery would Generate over 14V. This is not the 911 but my wife's Saab that I have the problem with.

I should have the new altenator for the 911 this week. I guess the Electrical God's are against me this month. Hope this is it for Electrical problems.
