Phew... got lucky

Had a skare today. This morning when i was leaving for work i started u my sc and it made a very loud ticking noise! Its been ticking quietly when cold for the past few months i thought it was the valves because i never did a valve adjustment on it yet in the 3 years iv owned it. So rather than worsen the problem i took my truck to work. Didnt worry about it much at work because yesterday i tightend up the muffler clamps that were loose so i thought maby i broke a seal. Got it up on the ramps when i got home and after a minute of looking around for black soot i saw i was missing a manifold nut on #6 ! Put one on it and shes all better dodged a bullet there. Speaking of valve noise. How do i know when i need to do the adjustment? Does it lack power or make clatter? Im thinking ill prolong it another year or two if i dont get any major symtoms

Do it this weekend. Actually the consensus seems to be about 12-15 thousand miles. Or earlier if the valves are clattering.

Issue is that the valves actually tighten up from wear. The valve and seat wear, sinking the valve into the head. This makes the clearance shrink. If you do not catch it in time, the valve won't close with full force any more, it will get hot, wear even faster and before you know it you have a burnt up exhaust valve.

That said, if you dread the job, I wouldn't worry about it up to 20k miles. That is if you don't drive the car on the track / desert climate where you may expect accelerated wear.

yup thats what i thought. Im heavy into minibikes and gokarts and recently discovered the cure to all my low compression engines was to adjust the valves. Most of my 6 engines the intake didnt close till about 1/2" from the top of the cylender and the exhaust opend about half way down the cylender. So i went from around 60psi to almost 100 on most of my engines. Made quite the difference Ill get to it sooner or later. It would be nice to know if things are in check and to see if i have any broken head studs.
