DIY clutch job on 996 C4S?
Hi,
Unfortunately, a bad valet parking experience turned out with a fried clutch..mine (see separate post if interested) Valet parking fried my clutch !!! Now, I have to fix it. I wonder if I could do it myself. I have done several engine drops on my '76 911 and I also did a 964 C4 drop some years ago. But, I wonder if there is anything substantially different in the newer 994. Also, do I need to drop the engine or I can just drop the tranny? Btw, I just got a new 2 post car lift, so this could be a great project to use it. Looking at the bright side :-) Any reference to post/pictures of someone who did this, will be greatly appreciated. I run a search but it seem that there is not much on the forum. Thanks in advance

HI Mario
you will need the only remove the gearbox to replace the clutch, and the 2 post ramp will be good, you will also need a transmision jack to lift/support the box, and a engine support, which bolts to the rear anti-roll bar mountings on the rear cross member, this is what I made 2" box as it need it ![]() ![]() ![]() the rest is just a un-bolt job. regards mike |

Sure, you can do it yoursefl. The real question is, do you have something else to drive? These weekend efforts often end up spanning several weeks.

You should be able to do it yourself. Half the battle is already taken care of since you have a lift. The engine support bar is a real plus too. I use a pedistal jack in combination with a transmission jack.
The flywheel seal will be the most difficult part to do if you don't have the factory seal installation tool. There are also some encapsulated bolts that you should replace while you are in there. (the three holding the intermediate plate and the four that are at the back of the engine. ) 3 x 900 385 275 01 4 x 999 385 004 01 Also, if you take the flywheel off make sure you replace the flywheel bolts with new ones. Good luck.

I just did this project on my 996 C4. There are some good DIY posts on Rennlist and 6speedonline. For the C4 there are 3 bolts coonecting the Cardan shaft to the transmission that are easily removed but not addressed in the DIY instructions. My RMS and IMS were not leaking so I left them as is.
It is a satisfying project that is made easier with a lift. Go for it. |
