'87 Carrera Heater blower(s) delete question...
OK, I've searched and read a number of threads but have a few questions I can't clear up. Not going the "full" backdate with SSI's or SC heat exchangers.
I am deleting the engine heater blower so I will need the left side 930 hose adapter. Which part should I order?...there seem to be 2 separate ones in the catalog. Right side will be fine as it is...coupe; not a cab. A few questions: 1. Seen vague suggestions in a number of threads that the engine compartment blower also aids in engine cooling? True? Any problems with eleminating it from that point of view? 2. Obviously the Carrera has footwell blowers. Can these be eleminated and still get some heat to the cabin? Some threads suggest that as long as the car is in motion and you open the heater flaps you will get heat. What about the defrost side of the equation? Or is it better to perform the mods to jump the switch in the relay to allow the footwell blowers to run independent of th e rear heater motor? 3. While were on the subject of ventilation etc, I will be removing the A/C as well...but I want to keep the fresh air fan to move some air in the cabin...what mods do I need to perform, if any to the components in the smuggler's box? Thanks in advance

The fresh air, a/c and heat are basically 3 separate systems (kind of). You can delete the a/c, including the smugglers box evaporator and still have fresh air to the defrost as it comes from the blower system behind the cardboard bit in the trunk by the firewall. The a/c only blows through the dash vents and the fresh air delivers air up to the windshield or down to the floor under the dash.
Now the heat is slightly blended with the fresh air blower to the extent you can deliver heat from the exchanger through to the dash where the fresh air blower will deliver the warm air up to the dash or under the dash. If you eliminate the footwell blower, you will need to connect a duct to take up the gap or no warm air will get to the defrost. As far as the rear fan providing engine cooling, I don't think so. When the red levers are down the gates dump the hot air out the bottom of the car, when they're up they deliver hot air to the cabin. The engine bay heater fan is only on when the levers are lifted.

Thanks for the reply, Tony. I know my questions are idiotic...but believe it or not I have only used the heater maybe 6 times in 8 years!!!
In some of the threads I read I got the impression that the engine compartment blower came on when a certain engine temp arose...180 sticks out in my mind. Not true? Second...if I keep the dash vent fan, will I be able to pull fresh air thru the dash vents with the elimination of the A/C? Will I still be able to have some foot well heat/cabin heat/defroster heat if I eliminate the footwell blowers and duct up to the defroster? Again, all...thanks for educating me. jim

I have removed the engine compartment blower with the Aircraft tubing and aftermarket left side airduct. Its quite easy.
I went without footwell blowers for a while and even removed one to see how it worked with just the fan. I ended up driving in some rainy humid weather and it was apparent in slow moving traffic the footwell blowers do thier job. WIth that said I ended up buying a used heat controll relay and jumped the relay to have the blower work. the set up works great now. I do not track the car or drive in much traffic so the engine blower used to cool the engine for me was a non issue. Here's the link for the relay jump: Carrera - Removing Engine Compartment Heater Blower In all the cost was this: Left side duct: $90 Tubing: $24 (ordered enough to install new hoses for flappers) USed Relay: $25 Here's the left side:

Thanks Monza...that is the thread I've relied on in my research. Appreciate the input re: the footwell blowers.
Anybody else gotten rid of footwell blowers?

This is what I've done Jim. Removed the AC compressor. I still have fresh air thru the vents.

Yes I have the footwell blowers. I don't know if I even need them. I mean they don't blow any heat do they? With the 3.6 I don't have the engine compartment blower. I have the 'snorkle' from the fan to the HE. I open the flaps and it gives enough heat to stay warm. I forget if I get heat thru the defrosters or not. But I do get air blowing. Complicated system, it's like who's on first with the blowers, levers, flappers, etc etc
