Mystery engine
Here's an odd one. '70 coupe in for an o'haul. No numbers in the usual places, but after cleaning found them at the flywheel end. 901/38 type, 6404726 serial. Nothing close in the spec books. Expected a 2.2, was a 2.0. Heads dated 11/69, way out of the 2.0 range. Guessing it was a factory replacement engine, or maybe a 914/6.
Got 2.2 P&Cs and found a set of 9/69 2.2 heads in my stash, so it will become a proper 2.2, but what the hell? Thoughts?

Isn’t that a 914/6 engine?

That’s a 914/6, basically a 69T engine continued on till the end of the 914 program

Kinda thought it was after seeing the numbers at the flywheel end. Wasn't expecting it, as I bought 2.2 P&Cs for it, so luckily I had some 2.2 heads.

Keep those 69 heads. It’s got a nice valve size for a 2.0 liter build. Just need to port the intakes.

The 69T and 914/6 heads have the same valve size as a 67S. It’s a economical way to start a 2 liter performance build.

Got a '68L bottom end that I could use them on. The pistons have a nice high rounded dome too.

Maybe the pistons were already upgraded? What cams were in there?
