Felt strip on door window R&R
I am currently stripping down my car ('72 targa) for prep and painting. I have two questions about replacing the outside felt strip on the door glass.
1) Are new replacement strips available? If so, from whom? 2) I assume that removing the door glass is required but it looks like a royal PITA to do. I've searched but didn't find much info on doing this on an early targa, which doesn't have the full window frame. I already have the door panel and hardware off. I assume that I can raise the window halfway, unbolt the regulator and wiggle it around to an open hole and remove it. What happens to the window? Can it be pulled out of the top slot or dropped down so I can remove the strip? Thanks in advance

I've seen these replaced with just a screwdriver. Using the screwdriver, roll the window down as you feed it into place. Roll it up a bit, then use the screwdriver again while rolling the window down, to feed it in. It is possible. I've seen it, but never done it. Far less difficult than removing the regulator.

i did mine w/o removing the glass, but i have a cab & there may be a bit more play in the window. i did remove all other rubber strips though, and then was able to remove & replace the felt strip with a screwdriver. be careful not to scratch the glass or the paint. the other difficult bit was trying to keep the almost completely disintegrated old felt strip form falling into the door.
good luck

No need to remove the glass AFAIK. I did my 78 by masking the paint by the chrome strip near the glass, getting a bondo spreader and carefully lifting/prying the chrome strip up from the door, rolling down the window, carefully prying the felt inward, matching the new felt to the holes on the flange (there are right and left sides) and then snapping back the chrome trim back down. Don't forget the rubber welting between the chrome strip and vent window (small strip of rubber, a long extruded tiny dogbone shape)

Thanks for the replies.
I am not sure if the early 911s are different or not. But I took a hard look at the strip tonight and the window glass is very firmly against the felt strip at the front of the slot. I don't think that there is any room to pry it backwards with the glass in place. I am bummed as I know what a PITA taking the window out will be. Can anyone give me any clue as to a source for a replacement? I have a bad feeling that it is NLA from Porsche.

On most early cars you must loosen the window frame to be able to pry the old strip out as described above. Clean the area well while out and treat any rust you find before putting in new strip. I got mine from pelican.
