chasis number help
I bought an 84 turbolook about two years ago on ebay. When I had the car delivered I found out it has a rebuilt title (wasn't advertised that way and Texas title did not reflect that it was rebuilt). I decided to keep the car because it is in good condition and the post-purchase inspection revealed that it is a straight car with no obvious residual damage and is mechanically sound. Since then I have been trying to find out more about the car. How can I determine if the chasis # matches the VIN ? I listed them below. Thanks in advance
Chasis 911 7 202058 VIN WPOAB9013ES121918

Fraud on eBay, who knew?
First off, do you really want to know? Or will you be happier just driving the car and enjoying it? Secondly, if someone was going to alter the VIN and chassis numbers, (which you appear to suspect) wouldn't they have switched to a clean VIN? If you want to dig into this.... Do all the VIN's on the car match? The trunk, VIN, the A-pillar VIN, the door jamb sticker? There are few more (maybe the hood and doors?)....and one under the dash on the cross beam? Found the number stamped in the trunk and door jam. Those numbers don't match. A pillar number plate not there just the holes of where it used to be I'm guessing. Haven't explored the other places yet. I wouldn't mind knowing good or bad. I enjoy driving the car, just curious.

If I understand this correctly, you found two numbers on the car--one in the trunk and the other on the door pillar--that don't match. The title papers indicate a vin WPOAB9013ES121918, and in the car, one of the numbers is 911 7 202058. If this is correct, here's my guess.
You have a car made up of two cars--a 77 911 and an 84. The PO chose to title it with the 84 vin. At this point, there may not be anything to be concerned about if neither vin shows up as a stolen vehicle. That's a pandora's box you may not want to open.

Interesting. I know for sure that the car was given a salvage title in 1984 with 13,000 miles on it. It was given a rebuilt title in Illinois. The door pillar has an illinois state police plate riveted into place with the WPOA.... VIN. This is the same VIN on the title. Looking in the trunk there is a stamped number to the top left of the spare tire. I looked further and there is a number stamped directly to the left of the tire, but I can't make it out.

This is getting interesting....a Johnny Cash Cadillac.

Not a good sign. That VIN tag didn't fall off, it was removed for a reason. And I can only think of bad reasons. Last edited by 1990C4S; 12-04-2009 at 01:51 PM.. |

Does your title paperwork match the state police VIN?
When a state issues a re-built title, they typically have an inspection and check the sources for all of the parts at that time. I wrecked a 944 turbo, and rebuilt it on another 'salvage' chassis. NY inspected it, and made me provide receipts for all of the various parts before I could get a NY title. Last edited by dad911; 12-04-2009 at 01:52 PM.. |

The title paperwork matches the VIN on the door pillar. Here are some pictures. They are iphone pics so I apologize for the quality.

I'd guess it's all legit. Front clip welded to an 84. Assigned vin of 84 by state agency. Possibly the second # in the trunk is another stamping of the reissued vin. Paperwork appears to back everything up.

Could be other reasons than a 'clip. My brother bought a 928 that was an ex-drug car. Police assigned a new VIN

It does seem to make sense now. Just the missing VIN on the pillar is odd.
That won't affect handling or performance. |

a local porsche shop had mentioned the ex-drug car theory becuase they could not find any obvious signs of a clip. I tried to contact the Illinois state police a few months ago, but the person I spoke with did not think there were any records available from 1984 that would explain why the car had a new tag. I would really be interested in the story behind the car. Not sure if there are other sources to find out this information.
