question on fitting on bottom of air box

another poster has a picture of an item that is conneded to a pipe that is connected to the bottom of the air box. see here: What is this for....??

My 75 does not have this device it has a hose that runs through the firewall area and is open just below the starter.

My question, do i need one of these or should i put a trap in the bottom of the hose and put some oil into it. If i can put a trap in then what is the maximum vacuum in water column that a CIS can produce? I think a trap would work much better than the device shown and it would seal the air box from unfiltered air.

thanks

I'd suggest you just cap off the end of the hose, or put in a section of clear tubing so you can see any oil build up, then cap it off. It sounds like the tube you have is long enough to contain quite a bit of oil and unless you over fill the tank or your engine runs hot and vaporizes the oil beyond normal conditions, you're not likely to find much in there, but you could flush it out from time to time.

The 75 is vented into the side of the airbox. Fumes from the oil tank coagulate in the floor of the airbox and has to go somewhere. The hose keeps the oil and water combination off the air shroud and drops it infront of the engine. The factory tube has a bottom on it but is a uncontrolled leak even as your tube is BUT either is doing the job, getting oil off the engine.
On the SC they routed the vent fume line to the throttle body so the fumes get burned BUT you need to seal the system completely so there is no false air leakage and poor running from air leaks.

then the open hose is not good?

Since the hose is open then it would allow unfiltered air to get to the engine. Does the fitting that is for the car act like a check valve? allows air/oil out but not in?

Hmm...seems like a bad situation to have it open. Does pelican have this fitting
