Elephant Racing Oil Cooler Fan Kit info

Hi All,

I have an 86 Carrera, which has the auxiliary oil cooler but no fan which i'm wanting to add.

I have read my oil cooler does have the provision for the OEM thermostat, but it does seem like a pain to put in due to lack of access.

The elephant racing kit uses an external probe, and is an adjustable thermostat. From what I've read, this probe is inserted between two of the fins at the top of the cooler. Is this correct?

My question is, it seems that most aftermarket kits offering this type of probe thermostat, instruct it to be inserted in the hose, and hose-clamped over. Will an accurate reading be obtained from having the probe in between two of the fins?

Also, if someone could give me a picture showing how the thermostat is mounted, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your help,
Adam

The fan thermostat is adjustable. You set it to come on in the 170-210F temperature range you choose. You can calibrate it based on your dash gauge.

Yup. You just inert in the probe into the fins in the cooler. The probe end is large enough in diameter that it wedges in there pretty snugly and won't flop around or fall out. Mine has been in there for almost 3 years now, no issues.

Accurate enough to kick the fan on when it gets hot. I think I set mine on the low side - around 180 or so on the control module. I never worried about how close to the actual temperature it was. I can tell you that when it's in July in Tucson when it's 105 I never go much above 9:00 on the gauge even in stop & go traffic with the AC running

I don't have a pic, but its really pretty obvious once you see how it works. You mount the control module inside the luggage compartment somewhere on the PS and the probe is simply a wire with a metal end on it. You just push it through the grommet for the horn wires and shove the end into the cooling fins. That's all there is to it.

The trickier part is relocating the horns and making clearance for the fan. Post '86 Carrera's that came with a factory fan have a modified upper bracket that is NLA. You might find one by posting in the classifieds. I just fabbed one up out of some scrap metal.

Thanks for your help,
