Engine number guru's

So I have a friend that has a couple of 4 cylinder engines that he's not sure of the size or what they are. He said they could be 914 engines or VW Bus engines. He thinks they might be 2.0 liters.

The engine numbers are:

EC023444

EC005293

Do you experts know from these numbers what type of motors they are? What size are they?

Thanks for your help,

1.8 L type 4 possibly 914

Thanks for the response DJ.

Anyone know if there is a way to have 2200 cc heads on a 1.8?
Thanks again,

There are no factory 2200 heads, just the 1.7, 1.8, and a couple 2.0 (VW bus & Porsche 914). Basically any head can be fitted to an engine with a little work (cylinder register). The displacement can be from 1.7 L to about 3.0 L. With the larger engines you are best using a custom head design such as offered by Air Cooled Technology.

DJ,
The reason I ask is my friends says he has read 2200 somewhere on the cylinders. This engine was a high performance engine but has been sitting for about 20 years. Thanks again for your help.
