Its a silver foil noise insulation. You've seen the posts of guys that strip the seats and carpet and cover everything with silver foil, including the door panels. It does work.
I wish I had the ambition to tackle a job like this. The 911 is a noisy car, not very refined at all, my 911 is a raw 30 year old sports car with crank up windows, no tilt wheel, no cruise control, no compass or cup holders, no ECU or engine management system. Noise just goes with all the things that it is... agree?

it's actually a foil backed vibration damper. it is not a sound insulator but rather stops metal panels from vibrating which greatly reduces noise. if you want an insulator (to actually block road noise) you need a closed cell foam of some sorts. this stuff is the first step/layer in making any car more quiet.

this link will tell you more about the product and has a little video as well.

dampening materials work by reducing the amplitude and lowering the resonant frequency of the vibrating panel

and, even a passing truck can cause a panel to vibrate

the panel is like the drum head & the dampener is like the wads of chewing gum that some kid sticks on the drum head -- try it on the garage band next door

also...

I hear that you only need to do the center 1/4 of a panel to "work"

i have heard that too, but the materials used to back that statement up were actually much thicker tiles. the foil is thicker on the tiles and i think the butyl is as well but i may be wrong.

i have never used any of don's products but they have gotten lots of good reviews. he was one of the first to make the thicker tiles and use the 25% idea as well. in years gone by he tested and reported on all sorts of products but took down that info once he started producing his own line.
