996 RMS tool - which bolts to use?
 

I bought the RMS tool to install the seal, but when I installed the tool to the crankshaft I noticed that the flywheel bolts will not fit into the tools holes, which means that the outer part of the tool (the one pushing the seal in) will not move enough to push the seal in. Is the tool supposed to come with special bolts?

If not, which bolts should I get?

morning bump!!!..I guess it will be difficult to find these bolts on a Saturday #TY@T#I@UY...another weekend without my car!!

I would like to be able to help but I have no experience with the 996 engine.

Can you call the people who sold you this tool?
Or call a Porsche centre and see if you can talk to a mechanic.

Just go to your local ace and buy some longer metric bolts. Sears and ACE have a pretty good supply.

This board is VERY helpful but you won't find a lot of solid experience working on the waterpumpers here.

My only useful advice for waterpumpers is to sell them. That is what I did with my last 2 996's. That said, I think with some common metric SHCS (socket head cap screws) available most anywhere you could make the tool work. Also, sorry about the cheap shot about 996's, Ive had alot of coffee.......but I really did sell mine :)

Mario, Be very careful with the 996 rear main seal (RMS) & installation. If improperly installed, it will just come back out. Utilize only the factory spring loaded factory tool which will place the factory seal recessed in the engine case by approximately 10-13mm. That brings up another note, use only the factory PTFE coated RMS and do not touch the sealing surface because the acid on your fingers will deteriorate the Teflon coating.

ok, I finally found the bolts that will work with the tool, but then...more problems.

I tried to install the seal using the tool, but it would not go in straight. I tried a couple of times, and the top part would always be more into the bore than the lower part.

So, I decided to start fitting the seal by hand and with the help of a rubber mallet. It went in pretty straight, and then I finish it up with the tool. I let the seal car alone during the night and, for my surprise, when I came back to continue the job, the seal had pop out almost completely. It really took some hard hitting to get it in, so i really dont get how it pop out by itself. I was using CurilT on the outside, so I am thinking this might have been the cause. i will head back to the dealer tomorrow to get a new seal and fit it dry to see how it goes.

Any suggestion/tip on how to go about this??
