I'm about to change the original fuel injectors on my 1973 911T w/MFI with some new ones. I have one of those lousy Haynes Manuals that tell you just about nothing! I just need to know if there are any gaskets needed for my new injectors? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks. Stephanie |

S, There are some O-rings that participate in the 'snapping' on and sealing of the injectors--Make shure you get a set--or eventually get a set--usually required when the injectors are disturbed for any reason- You Don't want a vaccume hole!
If you haven't removed the injectors, be shure to pull from the metal, and not from the hose--Or your going to be replacing more than you intend.............. G-luck....................S |

Tlook, you are referring to late model injectors, MFI injectors actually screw in. Steph, I can tell you more than you ever want to know about your MFI, having fiddled with mine all winter and just now getting it running right. First, have you already bought new injectors? If not, don't give up on your old ones yet. Wait till you have about a 1/4 tank of gas then pour in a bottle of Techron fuel injector cleaner. If that doesn't work, or your have already bought new ones, you will need two wrenches, a regular open end wrench and a flare nut wrench (looks like a box end with a piece cut out of the middle to slip over metal tubing) I can't remember, but think they are 15mm wrenches. First spray a penetrating fluid where the metal line goes into the injector. Wait, overnight is best. Now you need to remove the metal fuel line from the injector. Place the open end wrench on the wrench flats of the injector. Now slip the flare nut wrench over the fuel line down to the flare nut which holds the line into the injector. Holding open end wrench firmly, remove flare nut. Pull line off and out of way. Remove injector. There are no gaskets or "o" rings on the injector. It is a metal on metal seal. If you still have not bought new injectors, try soaking your old ones overnight in techron fluid. As the Haynes manual says "replacement is the reverse of removal." Make sure you put some anti-sieze on all threads before re-installing.

I agree with kurt. Don't get rid of the old. I had my 72 pump recalibrated about 4 yrs ago. They also tested the org. injectors and they were all just fine. Do the techron thing. This works great on all fuel inj. cars. Did wonders to my saab spg.

I beg to differ on this but there
are small copper ring gaskets that between the MFI injectors and the heads. My 2.4T engine had them. At least that is my experience and the gasket set for my 2.4S engine has them. YMMV Bill 72T with S MFI [This message has been edited by zotman72 (edited 05-17-2001).] |

Bill, you may be right, now that I think about it, but definitely no "o" rings.

Stephanie,
The copper sealing rings can be reused, as they don't crush like aluminum. Rather than replacing the injectors, try removing them and soaking them (after thorough external cleaning with brake cleaner/degreaser) in liquid Berryman B-12 ChemTool for a couple of days ... overnight in an ultrasonic cleaner (make a 'boat' out of aluminum foil if tray is plastic) would be even better! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
