hi guys, its my first post on the 911 board, because im looking for advice/answers on porsches in general.
It seems to me that wherever i go on the internet, porsche owners with diferent model numbers seem to hate or feel better than the other. So I have a 931 (924 turbo), that I have tried, and it has serious engine trouble, and i have learned a lot about 924s and come to realize that if I do buy a porsche it will not be my next one, no more 924 or 924 turbo probably. Now I was thinking about going into a notehr model number, wether it be 928 944 951 911 930 etc. But from what I have seen, people that don't own 924s think that porsche made the 924 a schitcar, people that own 944s seem to think all other porsches are schit cars, but have some compassion for the 944 and 928, people that own a 911 seem to think that all other porsches made do not exist/were made as schit cars...etc. Now why would you buy a porsche if the company makes one good car and all teh others schit cars? What kind of company is that? Now I am wondering, should i even bother with porsche? is it not the car that is the problem, but the people who own them with status problems? Usually when i have been on other car boards, such as let's say a ferrari board or a volvo board, or a Triumph board, they seem to all like the car name in general, not jsut their own model number. Its as if a 944 is made buy Porsche1, and a 911 is made by Porsche2, and porsche1 is a completely different factory than porsche2. I have seen ferrari owners around here, guys have a testarossa, and a 328 and they don't really race each other to see who is better, they more get together and say wow thats a nice ferrari. Porsche owners however, they seem to be out driving looking for other porsche models to target. Mr.Boxster races a 944 and gives him the finger. There goes two completely different cars, but no, wait, those are both porsches, so WTF i ask? One guy LIKES his car more than the other in Porsche talk i have found. "i really like the *** model porsche better than the *** model, I'm sorry but i just hate your car, and i also hate you, so F**k off until you get a porsche of my model. Why does it seem to me that more car owners who are like this own Porsches than other cars? Even those rice hondas, you don't see CRX owners yelling at Accord owners do you? no you see them yelling at neons and toyata mr2s, but thats natural, i think porsche owners should be yelling at BMW owners at least please if you are going to yell! (i'm not agreeing with yelling, but hey! do it to someone who isn't in your family if you have to do it?!) So like, what should i do? why would i buy another porsche if all these porsche owners seem to have this attitude? Now there are porsceh owners out there who ARE cool, like guys in 911s who drive buy and wave and talk to a 924 owner, or guys who own and enjoy both models, but there are MANY who are not like this. What is up? what is it about just Porsche owners in general that seem to be like this more than any other car make? [This message has been edited by AMCPorsche924Powerhaus! (edited 06-17-2001).] |

I guess it depends on who you talk to. Some are like that, some are not. I don't think any Porsche is a POS car, no matter what model. Some are just better than others. Say for example, a BMW 330i vs. a BMW 740i. Big differences in luxury, performance, and price. Now, I may not be a big fan of 924s due to its design, I do like the 951, 928, and the 914. The 996 and the 986s, well, that's another story. So...it all depends on who you talk to. Also, this is the internet, and people can say whatever they want. As long as you like and is enjoying your car, that's all that counts. Oh..and no 931 is created equal. Your next one may be a gem?

Seems to me like you are looking for advise/answers on Porsche "911 owners". I like both the 944 and the 911. But every time I read one of the "inferiority" posts it seems to confirm the 911 is the King of all Porsches. Especially the SC. Leland?

I think you should spend more time deciding what car you want and less time worrying about whether or not you will be accepted. I agree that there appears to be some posters that think the 911 is the car of God's and all others are unworthy. Most posters on this board are not that way. Many of us have a number of other older cars and are on other lists and enjoy helping others out in spite of what they drive. As to the others, ignore them.

You care WAY, WAY too much about what others think. How old are you? (I bet I can guess pretty close)

By any chance would that "certain course" be through an automatic car wash?

NO, I care about the car. A people make a car, its not just the car, its the people. Seriously, I am 17, though. ![]() If I get a porsche, and go to track events, i don't want to be there listening to guys cut down 944s pre-race. ANd don't want to be in a segrated system, where 911 owners go to the washroom in the 911 washroom, and other porsche owners go to their washroom, and seperate drinking fountains, lol. No, in Excellence magazine there are always 911 stories, this one was about an orange 911. The results of the race were that the 924 cararras were top spots. A guy in AUS races against 911s (when I sayt race, i mean, he competes, he wins, he loses, liek all races, but he beats 911s a lot). always shows us pictures, and stuff. Obin on the 924/944 board has personally seen 924 carrears in top spot on track many times. Do you know what a 924 carrera is. |

I can see somewhat your point AMCPorsche924Powerhaus. I've owned older BMWs for years and got my 911 - which I always dreamed of - 7 months ago. I'd heard of, and now sometimes seen, a snobbishness (i.e., "My Porsche is the best...") within the Porsche fraternity. Didn't see it in the classic BMW world much - this is in the UK. I guess this is inevitable as we're talking expensive cars and expensive maintenance: people have invested a lot. So there is a lot of "The SC is the best", "the '73 911S is...". But, you know, F*#k it! And them too! Be into what you want to be, whatever model Porsche and beyond. They all have various pros and cons and suite different pockets. 924s are certainly good for starting a love affair with the Porsche Marque, and it's cool to keep one, no reason why not.
Secretly, now I want a 356, I think. And incidentally, I've the most frowned apon 911, the 2.7. After a valve guide job - I bought it needing one - it's great. Trust your own judgment and don't listen to the "Mine's the best crowd". ------------------ '75 911S Targa '81 BMW Alpina C1 2.3 |

Actually he's got a point. One which I can easily answer.
I'm going to steal this explanation from something I read a while back. Basically it goes like this. BMWs are like sausage. Very good sausage mind you, but they are all very similar and have the same BMW flavor. They just come in different sizes and shapes. Same with Hondas and all the other "normal" cars out there. Hell, even Ferraris all have very similar Ferrari flavor. Porsches are different, however. A 944 is a completely different animal than a 911. No one would argue that. The 924/944 has a decidedly Audi flavor with lots of Porsche seasonig added. The 911 is Porsche flavor through and through. The 928 is Mercedes flavor with lots of Porsche seasoning. (or is it vice-versa?) I believe this is a result of the fact that Porsche is an engineering firm first. As a result, they are sleeping with all the other German car manufacturers. (As well as many other countries and industries) For example, the Mercedes 500E was heavily engineered by Porsche. The 928 has a Mercedes gearbox. The 924 was basically built entirely from the VW and Audi parts bins. Etc. etc. This gives the different cars very different personalities, hence very different owners personalities for each model. I was shocked at how similar the tastes are for 911 owners as they apply to other hobbies, drink tastes, etc. Anyway, that's my theory. It makes sense to me, and is an informed opinion. You can disagree, but I think I can back up my opinions. Still, I think we all root for each other when competing against non-Porsches and I think we all see the attributes of the other models. I personally would add any and every Porsche to my stable if I had the money. P.S. Don't compare a 924 Carrera to a normal 911. That is an unfair comparison. ------------------ Tyson Schmidt 72 911 Cabriolet 92 C-2 Cabriolet |
