Mating 3.0SC Motor to 70/71 911 Tranny
Hello-
I have extensively searched the forum here and can't find a definitive answer. I will be putting a carb'd 1980 3.0L motor into a 1970T with the original 911 transmission.....will it bolt up using the existing stock 3.0SC flywheel or do I need a flywheel built for this purpose (ie, from Patrick Motorsports or Kennedy Engineering)? The current engine in my car is a non original (non matching numbers) 2.2L with the original 911 tranny and a new 225 clutch- I am hoping that the new motor will bolt in using the 3L flywheel- but it seems like there is conflicting info regarding this. Any help is appreciated!! Thanks in advance!! Sincerely, WK Carson 1970 911T |

I purchased a 3.0 which had the flywheel machined to be used with the earlier clutch and 901 gearbox. I'll have to check dimensions, really haven't confirmed fit yet. Plan to put it in my 914. The 3.0 also had Webers with larger venturis and jets. I'll come back to you later.

The type 911/01 tranny (70-71) will bolt directly to the stock 3.0 flywheel. Just use the 70-71 clutch plate, pressure plate and TOB. The 915 clutch plate mates to the input shaft which is 2mm larger in diameter and will not work. The outer diameter is the same (225mm).
btw, the 70-71 tranny and clutch is much different than the 69 and earlier 901 setups. these require a custom flywheel as mentioned by Rusty.

Thanks guys- that is very helpful. Sounds like the 3L motor will bolt in with no issues. Thanks again!!!!
