Front Defroster Died - Please help
Hi Guys,
I went through a turbo conversion on my '87 Carrera last year, and I removed the blower in the engine compartment which pushes air through the heat exchangers into the cabin. My front defroster still worked just fine after that, and the heater worked as well, albeit to a less effective extent. When I started my car up over the weekend, I found that my front defroster blower was dead when I attempted to turn it on; however, the fan which draws air passing over the heat exchangers is still pushing air into the cabin. Does this suggest that the blower in the front trunk is dead? If so, does anyone have one for sale? I haven't gotten a chance to test anything yet, but I just wanted to get your thoughts on it. |
The blower in the front trunk is for fresh air only. Sounds like your footwell blowers have quit working. Do you have auto heat, that is a dial between the seats?
|
Yes, I do have the dial between the seats that appears to control a fan in the foot-well. That fan still runs. When I turn on the blower control just below the dash, I get nothing.

Well, fortunately for you the one in each footwell are what you need in the winter. Don't worry about the fan knob on the dash. To get maximum output for your defroster have the middle black knob all the way to the left, which keeps out the outside air. Now move the bottom red knob all the way to the right. The red knob controls the amount of heated air that goes to your feet or the windshield. All the way to the right gives max to the windshield. Now turn your auto heat knob all the way to max (3 or 9 depending on your switch).
As for the fan in the front, check your fuse box for a burned out fuse. |

The vent fan is in the trunk cover on the front firewall. controlled by the top of the 3 horizontal levers on the bottom of the dash. Look at Kurt V's post. |

So I have 2 separate issues: 1. Driver's side footwell fan is dead (turned on with the dial between the front seats) 2. The fresh air blower is not working (turned on with the dial on the dash) My a/c blows just fine though. I checked all of the fuses in the front trunk, and I can't seem to find any that blew. I'm assuming I need to replace a few fans. Does anyone know which part numbers I'd need for #1 & 2 above? Thanks! |

Just wanted to make sure you weren't talking about the rear defogger knob, some of which turn...

If only one of your footwell blowers is out, you may have the type with inline fuses. Earlier cars had no fuse at the blower, later cars had a blade fuse at the motor. Sounds like you have power to the footwell blowers but one may have a blown fuse.
