Coverlay fit
My '74 911 has the typical crack in the center of the dash. I read through the various posts on the forum about different options, and decided to go with a Coverlay dash cap. The original dash had a single speaker. Since I no longer use this speaker, I decided to buy a dash cap with no speaker cut-out. While it seems most users who have posted have commented on fairly easy installation, I'm struggling. I can't imagine getting it to fit without serious modification to either the existing dash or the cap. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there actually a difference between dashes with speakers and without that might be complicating matters? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've done this before
I do upholstery and have installed these before. I cut any high spots off the dash and then trim where needed until you can dry fit the cover. Then sand with 80 grit around the edges of the dash and cover. Apply silicone then use paper towel rolls and other objects to wedge between the cap and the windshield and let dry. Sometimes they fit (bam) sometimes they are a b@tch.
good luck ! where are you located? |

Thanks for the response Sleepy, I'm located in Colorado Springs, CO.
When you say you cut high spots off the dash, how much are you cutting? Is slight material removal, or is it pretty significant? My guess is I'd need to be cutting at least 5 to 10 millimeters of material off in certain places. |

What are you using to make the cuts clean?

You don't need to make the cuts clean, they will be covered by the new dash. I just used a few pieces of the old dash to mount the coverlay. Don't do that! You need to have most of the dash undernieth because the cover will warp if it's not supported underneith.

Use a drywall knife and slice it apart where ever there are high spots. Use washcloths and cardboard to brace the dash cap down for 24 hours so the silicone dries.
