![]() We're debugging the top end rebuild of a 3.3 turbo- everything is locked down except for a mysterious leak under the motor. Anyone have suggestions? Here are the symptoms: the air deflector under #6 right next to the oil cooler is quite wet- then the oil travels elsewhere from there, but that seems to be the wettest part we can see. There is NOTHING on top of the engine- breather, thermostat, lines, all those trouble spots are dry as a bone and brand new. It doesn't seem to leak at all when starting or just sitting; system pressure has to build before it starts dripping. And that's all we can see so far! Any ideas? -d ------------------ Dave 1972 911T (E motor) RSR replica project http://members.nbci.com/dtwinters/garage/ |

Try installing rocker shaft seals. I assume you have checked that the oil cooler is not leaking at the seals; also check for cracks.

Head work is all fresh with this rebuild. No leaks at the valve covers. No leaks at the oil cooler seals either- the only way the oil cooler could get oil over to that cooling tin is if there was a leak/puncture/crack in it on the surface facing #6- we REALLY hope that's not the problem but it is one of our only possibilities right now.

Dave,
My vote is for a pinhole or crack in an oil cooler tube facing #6 air deflector. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Rocker shaft seals are not normally installed on a street engine, they are a seal used on race engines. But they can also be used on your engine. Unless you asked for them, you probably don't have them. You can install them with the engine in the car.

![]() Update- The heat exchangers/exhaust on this rebuild came from another car that blew up. Turns out the right side heat exchanger was FULL of oil. When running it was blowing oil everywhere. Drained it, flushed it with simple green, test drive. No more leaking. -d ------------------ Dave 1972 911T (E motor) RSR replica project http://members.nbci.com/dtwinters/garage/ |

good to hear DTW.
Does anyone know if there are shops out there that can repair a punctured oil cooler? I may have a damaged oil cooler and sure as hell don't want to spend $700 for a new one. Any ideas??? |
