Sportomatic Problem

My friend has a 1968 911 with a sportomatic tranny. The other day it started puking motor oil from the are between the engine and tranny. We pulled the motor/tranny and seperated them. The area behind the drive plate (rear main seal area) is dry. There is a seal on the torque convertor that we think might be the problem. The seal itself looks good but we think it might have been pushed out. Has anyone seen this before? Is there another possiblity?

Pete

Check the machined surface on the converter that the lip off the seal rides on as they can get a groove worn into them and it will make it hard for the seal to do it's job. You can speedi sleeve it if you have to.

That would make sense if there was a slow leak. This went from bone dry to gushing oil. It looks like the seal got pushed out, the question is why. Is there some sort of relief valve to keep from overpressurizing the seal? If so that might explain it if it got stuck. We would hate to put a new seal in only to have it pushed out again.
