Installing roll bar - is it safe to weld here?

I am half way threw installing my roll bar, and getting ready to weld in the rear most supports. I know that there are fuel lines running close to here on the rear, and wanted to know if they are to close to safely weld in the mounts or if I need to drop the engine and pull the fuel lines out of the way before starting to do the welding...

See red circle in attached picture (not my car, borrowed from other thread here on Pelican)...

No need to drop the engine.

You should be able to move the fuel line once you disconnect it in the engine bay.
Feed it back through the loops and put it aside.

Ditto on Peter's comment. Disconnect both the filter and accumulator. Drain them. Let everything air out pretty good. Should be good to go.
Fuel comes thru the center tunnel. Then over to the left corner of the engine bay.

OK, cool - thank you...
So I will at a minimum need to move the fuel lines out of the way - I will jack up the car and disconnect them then.

make sure you wash any spillage on the ground, there will be sparks flying everywhere when you start welding.

I suppose you could get some header wrap too, put it around the lines to protect them.

That might work, but I would rather be extra safe than sorry when fuel is involved...

I have tack welded in the base plate for now, so that I can complete the roll bar. Once it is finished I will pull down the fuel lines and weld in the rear plates properly...

If I remember I stuffed a water soaked towel in there. Kept making sure the towel stayed wet and the rest of the area cool. Short welds. Just a thought. I think the fuels lines are just to the center a bit more than where you will be welding. Personally I think that might be safer than open lines and fumes.

Thank you for the suggestion dfink, I might give that a go - as the garage is attached to our house, I would rather be extra safe than sorry :)

As already stated. I have tack welded in the base plates for now. I think I will complete the cage work, and finish welding in the plate at the end.

Here is a progress picture...

you tying it into the seat belt top mounts Kroggers ,worth it while your in there imo

Kroggers 12-20-2009 02:08 AM

Sure will, Mr P - But I will do that last, as I expect everything to move a bit with the welding still to be done...

MrPerkles 12-20-2009 02:11 AM

yea put it in last when everything is bolted down tight, how about a gt3 style removeable diagonal ? ;)

Kroggers 12-20-2009 02:18 AM

There will be some diagonal pipe work as well, but i was not going to have anything that was removable - got any pictures?

At the moment I plan a diagonal to go down the rear - top left to bottom right. A horizontal harness bar with a diagonal from top right to bottom left.

Once it is all done, I will assess if I put any additional tubes in - I am contemplating having a cross pattern at the rear bars, but worried that is just over-kill and to heavy?

I used ally for the rear sections but im sure that will start a big debate so wont post any pictures here ,they are on my Gruppe IB thread
The new GT3RS has a nice set up

Kroggers 12-20-2009 02:49 AM

I will have to google the new GT3RS bar then, if you do not have any pics to hand?
