17" fuchs... Is HRE the only thing close?

friendly greeting;

is the HRE 311 the only 17" fuchs look wheel available? if so, anybody know of a vendor that deals in USED HRE wheels?

i cant believe that i am the only fuchs lover left on the planet... (but i dont love them enough to pay 4 grand for a set of wheels)

from SoCal,

PoorBoy Dav

LINDSEY RACING ALSO MAKE 17" FUCHS. YOU CAN GO TO THEIR WEBSITE:

Compomotive used to make 3-piece modular Fuchs replicas in both 15" and 16" sizes. I have a set of the 16 x 9's and they are very light and strong.

The web site for the US distributor does not show them as a current product offering. I spoke to the distributor several years ago and he is a very nice fellow and willing to go out of his way to help out Porsche owners. It might be worth a phone call or email to see if the 17" wheels were ever available, or might be available on a special order basis.

My 12x15 rear Fuchs are Compomotive.
I had such a nightmare of a time with the company that I will never recommend them. The experience was bad and the quality not equal to the price paid.

Does Lindsey racing offset the Fuchs for larger brakes? It seems kind of pointless if you have to buy spacers on top of these to clear bigger brakes, the usual reason people are going to larger wheels to begin with. I do like the idea though and I have 4 6X16 Fuchs that I can send in for discounting. I'll guess I'll find out by calling on Monday. If your not so hellbent on Fuchs, there are better, lighter wheels out there for the same price as what they are charging.

Not sure about Lindsey's Fuchs, but the beauty of 3-piece wheels is the ability to change the offset for a variety of applications. I suspect they're using BBS or other off-the-shelf rims in which case, the offsets are changeable.

There is a black 914/6GT clone (actually a real -6 with extensive mods, a 2.7 race motor etc.) here in So Cal that was built by Hergesheimer and races with POC.

It has custom 3-piece wheels which I believe are 17x10's (maybe even 11's) in back and probably 17x8's in front. They are built up on Fuchs centers with (I think) Kinesis forged rims. The car runs 275/40x17 Kumho V700 tires in back.

These wheels are probably BIG bucks.

(Last I heard the car has been for sale. If I happen to come up with the money before it sells, I may actually buy it. Very sweet car.)

More pics of the car here (halfway down page): http://www.nosubstitute.org/events/SOW12May01

You could try contacting Laura or Mark at Hergeshiemer for more info. Their web site is: http://www.herg.net I figure they either sourced the wheels for this car themselves, or at least know where the owner got them.

Speaking of 17-inch Fuchs

Pelicanite Mike Marshall has a set of 17-inch Fuchs he had made to his specifications. I hope he'll offer more information on them. Here they are:

How do they look on an early 911? Cool:

Jack,

Thanks for the Picture.

POC guy's have been putting these 17 inch fuchs on cars for several years. Here's the deal. There are several companies that are doing them. Most have been listed here. Also most of your Porsche race shops can do them oryou can do them yourself. The centers are 16x6 inch Fuchs and most companies use either the BBS rim halves or a Company out of San Diego called Monocoque. Everybody's heard of BBS. Monocoque is a company that makes wheels for alot of drag cars I think. Lindsey Racing uses the Monocoque rim halves but they dont really advertise that.

The 16 inch centers obviously need to be machined and the bolt holes put in. Some guys use 20 bolts, some more. I believe the BBS only come in 20 but I could be wrong. You can order the rim halves directly from BBS or Monocoque. Some guys use BBS outers and Monocoque inners to save money. You also need to order the bolt kit and the sealing ring. I got mine thru BBS I dont know if Monocoque sells them.

The BBS rim halves are $150 for the outer and $250 for the inner the bolt kit is $6.00 and the sealing rings are $13.00. The Monocoque halves are about are about $175. I also had my outers polished and my centers powdercoated.( I know several racers who are using powdercoated centers and they are holding up perfectly)

Like Sherwood said the great thing about the 17's is the ability to get the offsets you want. Like everything else on my car I am somewhat limited by Race class rules and am only running 8's in the front and 9's in the back. 245x45x17 in the front and 275x45x17 in the rear. I really did not have to make any major mods to get them to fit. Because it's a track car I already run pretty aggressive camber front in rear. If your not limited by any particular class rules, Randy Well's car is an excellant example of the kind of size you can put on the rear of these cars with the proper offset.

Hope the info helped.

Wow Mike. Everytime I see your car, it's changed and looks even better. Let's see; rear spoiler, 3-piece wheels, different front spoiler. What else? What happens the next time I see it? You must be having a checkbook war with fellow Gruppster Randy (Wells).

This a before pic (and not too long ago either):

Thanks Sherwood, I appreciate it.

The picture you took is my street mode. I only use the bigger wing when I'm at the track. I would never drive it on the street with the bigger wing. I really like the Ducktail and I think it looks much better on the early cars then the later style wing does.

As you know, Randy's car is awesome and I have to bow down to him. I only have about 25K in my car as it sits and by selling different parts from the car that I no longer use have actually only spent 17K out of pocket. I'm always lookin for the deals and do as much of the work myself that I can.
