Tranny fluid changeout....

Changed out the tranny fluid on the G50 yesterday,,,not bad, at all. No idea what the PO used,..will say that she was shifting just fine before the changeout.

She's now loaded with the MobileOne Delvac and shifts EVEN better now!!!!! How good can this get?????

No better feeling than to see no metal (of any kind) on drain plug's magnet!!!!!!

Happy Holidays to all Pelicanites...

I don't know if the fill plug for the G50 is similar to the 915 or not but I had a terrible time getting the fluid in.

What is the best way to fill the Transmission?

Purchase the hand pump from our host. It's inexpensive and efficient.

This mornin's run was soooo silky....all I need now is to rid the clutch pedal of it's top-play. I'm also curious as to the tranny's sound at startup/idle,..when it's quite cold outside. I've had that infamous rattle sound with the clutch out (quietened with clutch in).....when warm,..quiet as a mouse (well,...almost)

I have the Power Bleeder, from our Host (not yet used...),..but didn't bring it with me. We used the shop's pump bottle (after one thorough cleaning of it's interior and hosework,...leaked a bit at the bottles' fitting,..and seemed to take 4-ever to fill her (arms=sore this A.M. from pumping...)...shoulda' brought my bottle.......

Best,

funny, i did mine yesterday in my slopenose. used swepco 201. what is swepco 212?

been using 201 for years in my 911s. 308s and v8 Lambos. i sometimes add some GM limited slip additive in the Italian cars, as the gurus recommended it ( Ferrarichat).

whatever was in my slope nose g50 was watery, and clear. no surprises, but it shifted "hard". now it shifts great! my 85 targa has a 915 trans, and will get the swepco treatment next.

yeah, i just swapped out the fluid on my G50. Based on the color of the fluid that came out, it had Swepco in it. put in delvac. shifting has improved, for sure.

I just did my 915. I tried a pump from the loacal parts store but the fluid was too thick. I then heated the oil to make it thinner and it went down a funnel much easier.

Still waiting for that cold morning (tomorrow?) to see how she does when dead cold.

Today's runs (4) , were all smooth-shifting drives, for sure. As I stated: she shifted pretty damned good before the changeout....now that I know the "chemistry" is healthy, I feel better (therefore she must be shifting better=[[kidding]]] ).

In all of the process, we forgot to get the sample for Staveley......what a pisser'.

You're kidding right? Does it actually get cold in Georgia? Just yankin your chain. Good to hear it made a difference to a tranny that already shifted well. That same thing might be a project for me before too long...

We'll see 29 degrees tomorrow at 7 A.M....THAT will be the test (relatively-speaking).

Yes,..FRESH chemicals in there!!!!!!!!! Healthy protection, I'd guess.

I can't believe we forgot to sample the fluid. This would have been my FIRST TRANSMISSION FLUID sample to send out..........!!!!!!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Get a thick-walled plastic container (something like a grape juice bottle) and punch two holes in the cap. In one hole, you'll insert clear plastic hose (3/8"?) long enough to submerge itself in the fluid and long enough on the other end to reach the tranny filler hole. This will look like a grown-up version of your brake bleeder jar.

In the other hole, you'll insert the rubber-tipped air blower attachment from your compressor (see pic below). Fill bottle with fluid of choice and blow in compressed air. Fluid will rise out of the tube and into your tranny. No muss, no fuss.

Thumbs up

Filling the transmission in the Summer with the hand pump is easiest.

Have a look at the numbers on the 915.
If you find a 12, you'll have LSD.

To my surprise, JW uses GL-5 80/90 gear oil in the 915 and didn't believe in spending the extra money for Swepco.

That one is going in the tips/tricks file. Thanks for the great idea!

Keep in mind that this will work pretty good in warmer climates or on a hot Summer day.
For colder regions or Winter, getting 80/90 viscosity through a tube is a different story.
