ignitor problem - need help !
In spite of some threads about the weakness of Ignitor, I decided to order it (and in the mean time 5 "101 projects" books for me and my French friends :) ) . I put my order on PP last monday, and received it very quickly this saturday morning... the shipping charge is quite important, but the result is there ;) ...
So I decided to install the Ignitor on my '76 Carrera 3.0 on Saturday afternoon; no problem with the notice, it's relatively clear and I was helped by my mechanic, a friend of mine; so we did the fine tuning recommended for the distributor with vacum advance, connect the correct wires to the coil, and so on... Ignition... Nothing :confused: ! we double-cheked, but nothing. The notice didn't talk about what to do with the + wire which went before on the points, so we tried to plug it to the red wire, because we supposed it was the "ignition signal"... nothing more ! we tried to jump the "+", as indicated in the notice, but once again, nothing ... Desesperatly, we put the points back. So, I have two questions: - is it a common misaventure ? did I do something wrong? Should I give my project up and continue with my non-satisfacting points? - What do I do with my Ignitor? reshipping it overseas will cost me merelyas much as it worths, and with no garantee of success with the new Ignitor ? (I know that this question should be answered by PP guys, but if they read this...) Will I be one more disappointed Ignitor User :( ?? Ps: Warren (S-man), do not say "What did I tell you ?" :( ;) ; my car has still erratic run at 2100/2200 RPM, and we can't fix it, and my distributor is in good shape (I'm one of your best fan, so I read all your posts :D ) ... |
I installed an Ignitor on my 74 and it worked great. Unfortunately, I replaced the engine and no longer have my installation instructions. However, if I recall correctly, there was a left over wire after installation. There are two wires on the Ignitor, one goes to ground and the other goes to where the points connected - I think!!!!!
You should have received instructions for the installation. If you installed it incorrectly, you could have cooked the unit. Here's their site www.pertronix.com/ignitor.htm. As for more instuctions. Good luck. JT |
It's true - if installed incorrectly, then the unit can be damaged. I think that this qualifies as an electrial part, and is returnable only if defective. If the unit is 'iced' then we can replace it with another one.
Although I haven't installed this on any of my cars, we've had a ton of customers install these with no problems using the included instructions. Sorry I can't be of much more help than that... -Wayne |
While on this subject, has anyone tried or heard anything about the Ignitor II? Supposed to be a 'smart' ignitor that optimizes the coil discharge across the RPM range by varying the dwell as revs change.

thanks for your answers; I respected carefully the instructions on the notice, and did not intervert wires or something like that; I'm sure about that, because it was in the previous threads and recalled in the notice . I 've respected the diagram, which precises red wire on the "+" of the coil, and black on the "-"...
Wayne, thanks to respond (and Btw congratulations for your book-it's really cool, in spite of your stupid non metric system :D :D - when will you realize a French version?), but I've already seen that several people on this board complained about a non fonctionnal Ignitor, and I 'm afraid to be one of those... What can be the next step?? |
Wayne or Marc Weintraub(sp) or anybody else. How can one have a rev limiter with a Petronix Ingnitor? I want to keep my current CD unit rather than convert to a MSD6. Marc was going to sort this out a couple of months ago and I never heard back on his discoveries.

I think Marc decided to stay with the tried and true points system after an extended bout with two non functional ignitors :)

I know it isn't a specific reply to your question, but on the distributor of my Carrera 3.0, the positive side is that the stock rotor, with rev limiter, fits with the cap :D ... I suppose it's the same for 2.7. |
