86 Carrera electrical probs request for advice

My 86 Carrera's headlights turn off completely until I jiggle the paddle on the steering column that turns the lights from low beam to high beam. Then they come on and flicker or stay on, then after a while cut off again. I figure that it is a short or something in that switch on the column, does anybody have any advice on how I can fix it on my own?

Also, my cigarette lighter pushed in and won't eject? Think its a fuse? Does anyone know where I can find out which one and where to find the right fuse box?

Thanks,

Ed

Sounds like the turn signal switch is going. Its a standard replacement item, purchase new and when you install, lower the light switch and cut the old wires so you can see where the individual wires go and you dont get mixed up replacing them.
Check the lighter and make sure it is operating properly, meter for voltage and spin all the fuses occasionally so they contact well.

As far as I know, my lighter is a Porsche lighter. When I pushed it in, the lighter locked and would not come out. I think that it must have to heat up in order to to pop back out.
I checked the fuse box in the front on the driver's side and it looks like the fuse is ok. I have never seen fuses like this so I assume that if the little wire is intact the fuse is ok, is that correct?
I found a turn signal switch for the headlight problem, after you guy's suggestions and I will try to see if I can install it with the help of some of the threads on this forum.
Thanks for your advice. Keep it coming!

+1 on the turn signal replacement. I had identical symptoms and replacing the turn signal switch fixed it. I think the part is $100 - $125 and readily available.

if it fits and locks also has a lighter symbol its likely OE , could be the wiring check for power at the receptacle , you can also check the coil inside to see if it is intact(complete) , you can check the socket with a light or air pump 12v , if no tester, a gm lighter is a little smaller also some 12v acc you need to widen the contacts out a bit to fit.
