hi new to this forum i have a 67 912 and a 69 911 targa .i recently bought the targa and it apparently had an engine rebuild about 2 years ago .when driveing back from the docks the car was spluttering and pop in my mechanic says to change the leads,condenser and pionts and this should sought this out what do you guys think any suggestions i should put to him many thanks brian

When driving back from the docks the car was sputtering, so I dropped into my mechanic. He said to change the leads, (sparkplug?) condenser and points and this should sort this out. What do you guys think? Any suggestions I should offer him?

Second, welcome, den912, to the forum.

Third, and most important IMO, if you are asking for suggestions to offer to your mechanic, you need to find a new mechanic who knows Porsches inside out. Seriously, the advice given regarding the ignition components is logical and may be helpful, but it doesn't sound like your mechanic is familiar with all the nuances of vintage Porsches. In all fairness, we don't know the circumstances under which the advice was given--did he do any diagnosis, did he spend time with the car, did he check the carbs--so maybe this was just a first step to eliminate ignition as a source. Still, eventually you will need to find a real Porsche expert in your area so now is the time.

your mechanic basically told you to give the car a tune-up (spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, points, condensor and rotor). These are basic tune-up components.

I would check these components first before replacing them. Are they old, worn out and dirty? Then yes, certainly you should replace them. Your car will run better, and it may eliminate your problem.
