1980 911 SC Targa engine lid adjustment

Hey all,

Merry Xmas! I'm new to this forum so please bear with my lack of knowledge! I have been restoring a 1980 SC Targa. I replaced both the front and rear hood shocks and they work great except for one problem with the rear engine hood. I bought the car from a family member who had a whale tail put on way back in the 80's. Anyhow I installed double hood shocks (on left side) due to the weight of the tail. So now when the lid is shut it seems that the side where the hood shocks are is about 1/4" inch or so higher than the other side. I can't seem to figure out how to get a uniform adjustment/alignment when the hood is closed, anyone have this problem out there? I've been looking and trying to figure it out but I seem to be stumped!

I've used small washers in the past to align mine at the correct height. Also don't forget the rubber stoppers on the opposite end which screw in and out for adjustment. This may not work as I'm reading your thread if one side is higher (is it sticking out above the body?)

No. I have the left side even with the body and the right side is low. I did replace the rubber bumpers and screwed the left side in more than the right side but when I close the lid it's still uneven. With the lid open it visually looks symetrical. I did replace the old lower latch. But it's in the center so I don't think it should have anything to do with the problem. Not sure what to do next??? Where did you use the washers?

The washers shim the deck out from the hinge. The factory uses spacers in that application between the hinge and the inside deck. That will give you the height then the rubber screws give you the balance left to right.

I tried the washers, but it didn't do the trick. Huh, I'm not sure what the deal is! Any other suggestions?

Convert to a right side hood shock like the factory did and they both close equally.

You mean add a right side mount? I was kinda thinking that all along. What do I have to buy to accomplish that addition? I searched on Pelican and can't find anything. Is it just a matter of adding a couple of bolts? Thanks for the input and info...

DWB, I had a similar problem and it turned out that the left hinge was slightly bend due to the double shock. Try disconnecting both shocks and see it aligns. Then try connecting only one. Most adjustments will require varying the number of washers at the hinges, moving rubber stops in and out, and varying the depth of the center locking pin.

For parts, it takes a new right side hinge and a small mount that goes on the rear bulkhead. Look in the PET catalog on Pelican's site. The picture will make more sense than I can.
