How to remove mirrors?

Hello,

I need to paint mirrors (on a 1982 Porsche 911 carrera) but I have some difficulties to remove them.

How should I proceed to remove the mirrors from the doors and to achieve a complete dismantling (detach rubbers, etc.)?

Thank you in advance!

Julien

There is an allen screw on both mirrors which makes easy work of removal. It is pretty clear in the Bentley manual. You should get one as it will make all projects a snap.

Here is a link to buy one. If you plan on keeping this car for a while....then get one it is well worth it! You can also go to the classified ads on pelican and post a WTB ad for the manual. perhaps someone has an extra laying around.

If you PM me you email address I will copy the 84-89 carrera pages for you and email them to you.

The allen screw will only loosen the claw that holds the base to the door skin. Before you go there, use a plastic spatula, and slowly work it between the mirror and the mirror base. Be very careful, and do not rush it. You are trying to pry the mirror away from the base while supporting the glass, which is held in with spring clips.

Once the mirror is off, you can remove the motor and mirror base with a 10mm socket (3 bolts). There is a 5-pin connector harness inside the mirror base. The correct way to get this out of the base is with a pin extractor tool, which you can get from Baum Tool. It's a Hazet, and I don't remember the extractor diameter but I can look it up I think. Otherwise you will be cutting the wires. Tape them off to avoid shorting against the body when you turn on the defroster or move the mirror base.

Then you can loosen the mirror base and disassemble the mirror housing.
