I race a 1965 911 and just lately it has started to over heat,i run a wing mounted oil cooler .
I thought it might be the engine thermostate but dont know how to check it ,any ideas please help Thanks |

I'm not sure on the matter of checking the thermostat. I believe you can drop it into hot oil to check it, but don't quote me on that. Are the lines to the cooler getting hot? If not then that would definitely show a problem.

The stock thermostat opens at ~83 deg C. I have tested mine by removing it from the engine and submerging it in boiling water (100 deg C). It is pretty obvious if it is working - the center plunger expands and opens and closes windows on the side of the housing. Be sure to dry off the water before returning it to your oil system.

Check the temp of the oil lines per Steves post, you should have a hot line (from) and a really hot line (to) the cooler. Most of the add on coolers require an additional thermostat, usually mounted in the right hand wheel well above or in front of the wheel. You may need to check the operation of it as well. Don't forget to check your timing and look for any intake leaks, both could lead to lean/hot conditions. good luck.
