Ignition Switch Removal?

1972 911:

With the ignition switch bezel removed, there are what appear to be two fasteners with rounded over heads that need to be removed (10 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions in the picture).

Assuming these must be removed in order to remove the switch, how is this done?

Thanks,

Frank

Frank, you have to drill out those heads, then it will come out. the is also the 5mm allen head stud w/ 13mm locknut at the column.

once you get the ignition out, those sheer studs back out with a small flathead screwdriver. For reinstallation, you can use proper allen head bolts and fill heads with JB weld after install or our host sells the proper studs with secondary heads twist off on torquing them down.

The large round heads can be easily slotted with a dremel type tool and then use a flat head screwdriver to remove. You may need to carefully remove the lower dash face piece so as not to damage it and then reglue it when reassembling. All in all, I think easier than drilling that quite large bolt head. The smaller rivets are easily drilled out.

+1 on slotting with a dremel & using a flathead screwdriver. Be very careful to not remove the allen head stud completely & loosen just enough to get things apart. Ask me how I know.PITA to get back in!

Also, as long as you keep the rivets intact, the two screws will come out with fingers once the initial tension is off, which is only a 1/4 or 1/2 turn. After their loose, then you can rip the rivets out.
