CV clamps

I have been trying to find a source for the compression style CV clamps that require the use of the CV clamp tightening tool.

Size of clamp that I am searching for is 73mX6mmas used on 73 911's.

On the CV boots, instead of using the stock compression clamps, I have used the regular clamps from a Carrera's heating duct. They are thinner than your regular style SS clamps available at a parts store.

heavy duty tie wraps work great, too.

Hi,

Our local auto parts chain "Number one Auto" carries the straps you're describing. I know they sell them in a CV joint repair kit (a new rubber boot anf the metal clamp) for around $12-14 USD.

It may be worth a shot asking around at your local auto parts store.

Steve, here's a recent thread on this BBS about the same subject.
I posted some photos of clamps that may or may not work. So far they've been fine. Take a look:

Steve, by the way, welcome to the board. For those of you who don't know Steve "rolling chicane" Taty, he's a great guy, time trials a early Targa and knows a lot about these cars. Just kidding about the chicane part, he's a very good driver. He'll bring some good knowledge and info to the board. Again, welcome.

I am installing new joints in my car. Should i tie wrap the rubber boot part that is on the half shaft it self. I have seen both where people leave them un-tied and tied.

CV clamps

Bruce

Thank you for the kind words.

I have been using the tie wraps, and they do not seal as well as I would like. I have tried 2 small one on each joint and the large balck ones. I still get seepage, even with permatex under the boot. I know that the 'big boys' use the tire wraps as I have seen them in their pits at the big races. Time trialing seems to be the nemesis, or too much grease.

I got what the dealer had, and they look less well adapted than tie wraps.
Wurth had some of the compression type, but not the size to fit my 73 911. I even tried the Jeep dealer as I saw the clamp on a Grand Cherokee. I do not want to buy the entire kit just for the clamp.

They have to be out there somewhere.

The local NAPA store stocked these clamps. The had a box of the size needed for '73 CV joints and sold them individually. The also sold the tool (reasonable quality too) for crimping "the ears" to tighten the clamps. Cheers, Jim

Cool

There was discussion somewhere about preventing CV boot expansion at high speeds by using tie wraps or safety wire in indendations in boot to prevent boot damage from boot expansion. Have no personal experience.
