Smog air injection pump
Greetings,
I have a question concerning the air injection pump on a 1978 3.0 engine and really respect the knowledge base on this forum. My question is, I lost the belt on the air pump and am wondering if it will harm the engine in any way by running with out it? Or is it actually better, since the car is smog exempt, (1975 911S), or should I replace it immediately? Thanking all of you in advance, Bruce |

I would replace the belt, or remove the pump altogether and properly store it until need for testing.
They have a tendency to eventually seize if run without the belt. Good working units are getting harder to find these days.

You are fine without the belt. I removed my entire air injection setup.
A little less drag on the engine can gain power. Good point, staylo. I have mine tucked away with the other bits I've removed over the years.

It is possible for the exhaust injection tubes to deteriorate over time and heat without the air flowing through them. I removed my pump and the air injection tubes, so they wouldn't brake off in the exhaust. There is a plug that screws into the empty exhaust holes - I think they are from a 914 brake plug:

My 79 sc has a nice condition air pump, but I want to remove it since I don't need it in NY and I like to simplify as much as possible. It looks easy to remove, but what about the hoses, should they be coupled, or plugged? I'm not sure of the consequences of either. it seems many of you have done this, can you enlighten?

I removed the pump awhile ago, but I couldn't get it's mounting bracket out, there was too much stuff in the way to get it to clear the bolts. Any ideas?
I also left the hard metal air lines in place, because it looked like I would need to remove the driver side heat exchange/header to get to it. The passenger side air lines look easy to get to. I've been thinking of cat bypass anyway. Maybe I should just get under there and take all that stuff off, and get some of those 914 caps. Now the alt fan pulley has an extra groove, too. I will need to find one with only one groove for the one belt.

Since you live in Kalifornia, your 78 is still subject to a smog inspection. The pump, without a belt and hoses connected has a tendency to rust from a small amount of exhaust gas pressure entering back through the injector tube.
Disconnect the hose and cap it then massage the pump periodically before you get the inspection. |

Targa in serch of worm weather
My '81 Euro doesn't have the airpump system, it was removed and sold by PO. I am moving to Ft Myers, will I need to reinstall the system to clear testing in Florida? Stock 3.0 (930/10) euro engine w/tensioner upgrade, & stock exhaust system. I searched for 2yrs for this car and use it as my every day driver, not because I must but because I want to. It's true, There's No Substitute. Thanks for any help you can give. Will
