Clutch job: OEM vs Sachs Power Clutch

I have a clutch job in my near future, and I am getting together my shopping list. I am planning on buying Pelican's "Super-Kit Complete 915 Clutch Package", which should come with everything I need (and probably some stuff I don't). There is an upgrade to the kit, which would substitute the standard OEM disk, pressure plate and release bearing for the heavier duty "Sachs Power Clutch". for $125 more.

Is the power clutch worth going to? I primarily drive on the street, but plan on autocross and probably track events in the future. The car is an otherwise stock 3.0 with CIS.

Thanks,

Tom

I beleive the SC's came with a rubber plate in the center of the pressure plate that is prone to failure. When it happens the clutch system is inoperable. I don't know if it came on 82's, but IMHO the Sachs kit is worth the extra $.

I don't know if its worth it, but I am planning on getting the power clutch when I replace mine. I don't care about how much pressure I need to disengage the clutch (I don't know how much harder the power clutch is to work). I look at it as a way to guarantee that a girlfriend will not want to drive the 911

One way to guarantee that the girlfriend doesn't drive the car is to not install the helper spring!

The replacement OEM disk is spring centered, so that isn't really a consideration. My wife doesn't drive it much, (wide tires+manual steering=she takes the truck) so that isn't an issue either.

Will the Power Clutch last longer than the OEM?

Aside from the extra cost, is there a down side?

Tom

going on the advice of Wayne I put the power clutch on mine, and did it myself..that way the money saved could be funneled to a better clutch.

Installation was a breeze.
Hed the fly wheel resurfaced at a Pelican Parts recommeded place...top notch work

The clutch engaged a bit higher then the OEM one...
While I was in there I found a nearly broken clutch fork and a shaved to bits throwout bearing

But overall I think it is worth the extra bucks.
the clutch engages stronger so my foot work is a bit more delicate...I asked him to make a clutch package that included the power clutch, that way you can get everything in one package...with a discount!

post any specific questions

MJ

On my advice? Hmm, don't remeber that one, but ok.

The Power Clutch is best for higher HP conditions, where you think you might slip the clutch. Also for track events, where you might take off the line a bit quicker from the extra grab. It has some type of kevlar lining (or something like that) that has spaces to cool the lining (like grooves in a brake disc).

From what I hear they work very well. They're a little stiffer than stock, but also won't remove your teeth like a solid-racing disc will...

I had one solid disk in my 200HP 914-6 that basically shook the car apart! (don't ask)

Hope this helps,

Wayne
