Just bought my first 911
Hello everyone,
I just purchased my very first 911, or Porsche for that matter. It's a gun metal gray '82 SC, with just over 52,000 miles. I live in Minneapolis, so I won't be able to drive it for a few months, so it's tucked away in my heated garage washed with a cover on it and Sta-Bil in the fuel. I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me with: 1) Where can I find an owner's manual for this car. A PDF would be great, but I can't seem to find a free one anywhere on the Internet. 2) Is the car supposed to squirt washer fluid on the lights every time you turn them on? When I turn the lights on now, I get this little shop of washer fluid all over the lights, and all over the car for that mater. 3) Will that headlight washer fluid hurt the paint? 4) On the top of the motor there is this hose that is about 2" in diameter and wrapped in some sort of cloth insulation. The installation is very dull thus making the hose pretty ugly in an otherwise pretty clean engine compartment. What part is that and can I replace it with something a little more pretty? 5) The car in euro-spec. It's got the cool checkered seats, no A/C, and none of that bothersome emissions control gear (and it shows, run it in an underground parking garage and you can tell pretty quick). At any rate... The car has the official import sticker on the left door. The speedo is in MPH only and goes to 180. I am trying to figure out if that is the original speedo or if it was changed at import or later. If it was changed at import, would any miles on the original have been pre-clocked on the new one? Thanks guys! ~Max |

You can send out the speedo and get the face changed along with the gears to show correct speed.

Welcome aboard Maxman. I'll try to answer a couple of questions for ya.
1) Check the classifieds here and on Rennlist......or ebay. Be nice to have the books if possible. Although in the interim I'm sure someone here will have access to PDF copy. 2) That don't sound right to me but being a Euro may be one of those suttle differences......mine doesn't do it and the headlamp washers work fine. 3) Don't think it's any threat to the paint or many other cars would be showing signs. Pain in the ass though to keep getting spots of washer on an otherwise shiny car. 4) consider it original and value it as Patina. 5) Not likely original speedo, Euro/ROW car would have had kmh, unless the conversion is documented I would likely suspect that your car is not showing true milage. That is one of the pitfalls with buying a Eurospec car with Speedo conversion. Did you have a thorough PPI? Oh yeah and where are the obligatory Pics. Enjoy the ride!!!!

I'll going try to take some pics right now. It's not lit that well in the garage, but I'll see what I can do.
I did have a PPI, the shop said it was the best shape of any 911 they had seen in a while, and that the conversion was legit. |

If they confirmed it, I assume there was documentation? If that's the case you got a sweet low milage baby there.
Come on with the Pics, I can't wait to see those seats.......that could make the car very interesting. I love some of the ones I have seen with the Plaid inserts.

I had a US '82 SC. Great car.
U.S car weaknesses unless previously corrected: Rubber hub clutch - will blow apart at some point. Air box needs relief valve. Cam chain tensioners. Speedo for US cars was max 85 mph. (I'm guessing they re-faced yours when federalized. I think the 85 mph was one year only.) Windshield washers should not come on with headlights. In us cars there was a small switch on the dash - say, maybe lower right of the oil pressure gauge. (fluid shouldn't be a problem with the paint, but flush it out and use something you're comfortable with. If the pump is in good shape it's useful for spraying the windshields of tailgaters) Great seats. Bill |

Welcome aboard! I have an '82 also, U.S. version. I envy your additional h.p.
To add to what the others have said, I think the headlight washer should only squirt when you toggle the dash switch. Without the owners manuel, turn on the headlights and play around. It's a rocker switch on my car. (The washer should only work with the headlights & ignition on, and then only when the switch is activated). The washer fluid shouldn't hurt the paint, if it's plain old washer fluid. Need to see a pic of the hose thingy on top of the motor. Doesn't sound familiar. On the owner's manuel, I've seen ads for new ones, I think in a magazine, but I can't remember where (Pano, Excellence?). They're also available used at memorabilia events if you get lucky. |

Thanks for all the info guys!
Regarding the speedo. I'm really hoping it was just re-faced and not replaced. The car really looks like it only has 52,000 on it, and the car fax checked out. Did the non-85MPH US speedos go to 160, or 180? If they went to 160 then I'm thinking this one must be a refaced euro speedo, since it goes to 180. Interesting feedback about the headlight washers, I'll have to look into it. Regarding the manual... Anybody know about this site: Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site ? This guy says he's got a PDF manual he'll send for $25. Have any of you done this? Do any of you have one? Here's a photo of that hose. ![]() It's the one with the loose strings. The strings didn't come lose until I rinsed that engine after simple-greening it. Thanks! By the way, any engine cleaning advice? |

It was actually at a local Volkswagen dealer. By buddy bought a Jetta there and I came along as the mechanical inclined friend to check it out. I noticed they kept a very nice inventory of used cars, mainly VW, Audi and the such. A few weeks later I drove through the lot when I was in the area and I noticed this 911. I've always wanted a late 70s or 80s coupe, and after some research I found out an SC was right up my alley. I was immediately in love. I looked at a bunch of other SCs to avoid the love a first sight scenario but found none in nearly this condition of this one.

That's a heater hose which supplies your cabin with heated air. I'm certain you can find a new one here at Pelican Parts. Here it is, in fact: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-211-522-00-M260
It's about $15. Beautiful car!! ![]() |

Our host can fix you up with a new heater hose to match the newer looking one in the upper left corner of your pic.
I think that fan needs to be polished. Little winter project. Half hour maybe. Bwawahahaha. Have fun & good luck with the car! |

Nice - love the seats. Good score.
Fan polishing - way back when, I started with 600 grit for the real rough patches, and worked my way to 2000 grit. Finished up with autosol metal polish, but any metal polishing compound will do. They are made of Magnesium alloy, so is unlike other metals you may have worked with in the past. A word to the wise...they look freakin fantastic after a good polish, but will oxidize again within days, and faster still if you splash water on it like during an engine wash. It gets all spotty in a real hurry. Engine washing wise - you're doing it right (in my opinion). Diluted simple green from a spray bottle then a low pressure water spray to rinse, then a wipe down. Obviously keep the water out of the ignition system and also note that the alternator is located behind the fan.

Nice car! Love those Pascha seats!
Seeing that the manuals are termed "no longer available" on Pelican, I'm sure our hosts won't mind if I post a link to these guys: Retro Motor Works, LLC - Porsche 911 1980s Not free obviously, but waaaay better than a pdf ![]()
