Distributor Cam

Been having problems with what appears to be the distributor mechanical advance being stuck. Took dizzy apart cleaned and lubed. Still no good. Taking apart again and have a question for the group.

Should the dizzy cam move freely on the distributor shaft? Not talking about the drive gear which is pinned.

Picture of mine.

Needs to move on the shaft and operate the advance weights. Hold the bottom gear tight in a soft jaw vise and twist the rotor to see. If it's tight, spray some penetrant in there and work the rotor back and forth. Sometimes you have to clamp some small visegrips on the area above the cam and apply some heat to the cam area from a small torch. Just gently heat, don't turn stuff blue, and work the visegrips until it's free. Penetrant is flammable, so expect some flaming.

Is this a SC 3.0 distributor?

As John mentioned the top section should move free. In the center of the shaft where the rotor mounts should be a small piece of felt with a screw under it. The screw secures the rotor advance shaft to the mainshaft. remove the screw and the rotor mount should slide upward.

Make note of the position and size of the two springs (they are different). Carefully remove them with some needle nose. Once the aforementioned screw is removed that shaft will slide up and off. It will look like an upside down "tee" with the two spring posts on the bottom.

ONce its off, clean and lube until it slides and moves freely.

While you have it apart, make sure the two weights on the shaft can rotate freely. Then reassemble.

Assuming it is an SC, you also need to make sure the vacuum advance plate is free to rotate. This is located in magnetic coil. It is the part that the vacuum pod arm attaches to.
