When Do You Replace Your Clutch Cable
 

I have an 84 911 and i was wondering when do you guys replace your clutch cable?

Do you wait till it breaks or do you replace it as a scheduled maintenance ?

My P-car is a daily driver so that cable is worked quite often.

I replace mine when the pedal starts feeling "scratchy". Preventative maintenance for sure. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace.

There is a clear plastic liner around the steel cable.

This wears through fairly quickly. I wonder why Porsche bothered to do this?
Anyway... Cleaned and greased the cables last almost forever. Other things on the car will fail before this does. (Fan belt - ignition parts)

You'd think it would be replaced as part of a clutch job but often they're fine.

There's something to be said for an old school cable clutch.

I replaced the cable on my '86 only because the rubber boot was torn, which a mechanic suggested that I replace. Since the cable had to be disconnected from the transmission to replace the boot, I figured a little preventive maintenance was in order. As far as I could tell, the cable showed no signs of wear. I had the new cable so I replaced it anyway. It's a fairly simple process, just follow the instructions in the Bentley manual, although you will need someone to help (pushing the clutch pedal while you measure travel).

I replaced mine after it broke.....
I should have listened to that little voice in my head that said "hey this clutch feels different this morning." The cable broke about 30 miles out...

Never broke a cable, but did break the helper spring bracket on a '86 Carrera 915 tranny...had to drive home without a clutch.

With suspected high Mileage, I'd suggest you change it.

Make sure you slide out the inner wire of the Bowden cable enough to lube with Silicon, then install and adjust the clutch per instructions and oil/grease the various pivot points on the levers and the C-spring.

Most people rarely go under the 911 to do some TLC meaning: The external clutch parts get dry.
It is good practise to regularly check the CV's, oil the heater air valves, oil the clutch-parts and the bell-crank pivot for the TB linkage.........................

I replaced mine after the rubber boots breaks in several places. One word of warning. I bought a "used in great condition" one from a fellow pelicaner and it came worse than mine old one. In restrospect, I would just buy a new one and be done with it. It lasts 20 years.

be careful when buying a new cable. there are a bunch of inferior cables out there that do not last at all. get the genuine porsche part

The new cable I have is manufactured by Cofle. Cofle is an italian manufacturer of OEM cables and controls for automotive and industrial use.
Has anyone heard of, or have any experience with these cables?
Paulgtr, I hear what you're saying about the genuine Porsche cable, but at the time of purchase that was not an option, I was in between jobs and cash flow was an issue.
