When I got my information together for the new 911E registry I started to wonder if I have the original engine in my '73. Acording to the usual souce books the engine code is within the range to match up to the vin code for that model year. But are these numbers supposed to directly match in any way?

As far as I know, Tom...no. When I read engine and VIN numbers listed with the early S registry, there doesn't seem to be a relationship. Guess the only way to know for sure is through the cardex thing, the factory record for each car.

I know that for a fee (I think it was around £60), Porsche GB were going to be able to tell me the exact build spec of my as it left the factory, inc engine number. However I am too tight to do this.
I don't know for sure if my engine is original, but the chassis number places my car as an April 73 model. Based on the engine number (and making an allowance for coupe production), I think the engine was made at the same time. Therefore I am assuming that the engine is original. ------------------ Marcus '73 S Targa |

No, they don't "match". That's why the term "matching numbers" when used for 911s really is not correct.
Some American cars, like early Corvettes, were assigned engine numbers that matched the chassis number. I think Ferraris may have been the same. Thus the term, "matching numbers." The 911 engine and chassis numbers have zero relationship to each other. They just took a chassis with a number, and installed an engine with a number into it. Now, a 911 could of course still have the *original* engine. You can get the data from Porsche, I think, regarding what engine went into what chassis. But you can't tell by just looking at the numbers (the most you can "match" up is the year of the engine and the year of the chassis, not specific engine to specific chassis). |

Thanks for your help guys. My chassis number and engine number are both low in the range for 1973 so I will assume that it probably is the original.
