Lot's of opinions. I appreciate the input. Here's a couple thoughts and pics. One thing that was pretty big for the 930 starting point is the Historic Plates. I was able to do this by pointing out to the lady at dmv and the people in Sacramento that the law states that any vehicle older than 25 years old, with historical significance or a horseless carriage, if you can believe that. They didn't want to do it, but they did after I pointed out the statutes of the vehicle code. I got the idea from "flyn930", who lives close here in Poway, CA.
The idea of the trade for something like I'm thinking would be great. That would keep the 930 in existence for someone else and I get the car that I want or close to it. Plus or minus some $$$$. If you guys are familiar with The FJ Blue RSR Replica that was featured in Excellence last year. I believe it is Mark Kinninger's car. That's similar to what I'm thinking about. I think that was a 3.6, not pushing the 400hp area though. Definitely a nice car. It was for sale here for awhile, but it's off the market now. It was last advertised for 45k, which I thought was pretty good. Shoulda bought it. I have contacted Mike that posted above about a trade for his car. One problem will be the smog stuff in CA. That's where my 930 shines. I could make it a fire breathing jet engine and still have registration for life with no hassles. So, an out of state car is a problem. It has to be street legal, period. I know these turbos (930s) can be made to be quick with the mods. Bigger intercoolers, boost springs, lighter turbos, 5 speeds, etc, but I really desire a normally aspirated car. I used to have a 200hp vw in a sand rail (800# car). I love the response, sound and idea of a na car now. So, if I were to keep the 930, I would definitely go na anyway and get rid of the turbo motor or store it for something later. Does anyone know approx pricing on a new gt3 motor? 30k 40k???? That would make a unique car wouldn't it? There is a local POC guy, hi John, that has a gt3 motor in his GT2 POC car. It sounds like a great idea to me. Reliability, power and all. Like I said, start with a 75 or earlier chassis and you are good on smog too, even here in CA.

Seriously, buy a smog exempt car, widebody and brake it, toss in whatever you want! There was a fresh GT3 motor FS over on Rennlist, a friend of mine actually, for a negotiable $20K.. |
That is a nice car. Kind of hard to justify the mods on it.
My '79 has some history that made bringing it back to original not really an option. So I haven't worried about making un-reversible changes. |
The Porsche that made TRG ran a 4 speed trans w close ratio gears to handle the power.
A 993RS or RSR motor could be fun. However, HP would be fun but is not the last word in what makes a car fast. One of our DE guys runs a 2.8 MFI motor making 245 hp and if he is not TTD he is not far off. Close ratio gears, pistons, rods, cams, ports & PMO's making your motor a 3.4 would be a weapon and easy to do. Enjoy. |

That must've been the Hester New Year's run a couple years ago. I remember. I have seen the other Kinninger car for sale. For some reason, it just isn't spartan enough, if you know what I mean. I'm sure it's fast and such, but the interior, color, etc would have to be redone, so I haven't seriously considered it based on the asking price being pretty high. Your car looks real nice, I read the webpage on it. Awesome. I have quite a few offers in my pm box that I am considering. The New York IROC replica would be no brainer if it weren't for the smog. Although, I might be able to get it smogged through the same rules that mine got through under. Still considering all options at this point. Thanks, Steve |

Rip out the motor and sell it then build a 3.8tt and trust me, you will destroy anything that comes in your path with instant boost, no lag and more power than god himself.

Just an update, looks like there is enough interest in trades for some very nice completed or semi completed project cars.

just my 2c. i have a 964 3.3 turbo. i did an EFI conversion and now it drive more like a very strong NA engine (dyno at around 430 hp) you can still feel turbo but it's smooth and no lag. It's transform the car. i would talk to some turbo specialist first see your option.

Well, here's the latest. I've had a few offers that haven't panned out for lightened scs with widebody kits and 3.6 conversion. A couple of nice cars. I was working on a trade for a 3.8 car that would've been great. Here's what I have decided to do.
Since destroying a 930 doesn't sound too appealing to anyone, including me, I will pursue the trade and have went ahead and listed the car here on Pelican for sale. I will be patient and wait for a good trade or the right selling price. I don't think there is much of a market for these right now or any car for that matter. A couple things that are swaying me towards converting my 930 if it doesn't sell. 1. Historic Plates, these seem to be so rare, I had no idea. Every trade that I have been working on would have to be registered at our residence in AZ. Not too convinient. Envision track car, street legal (this is special in CA, I know it's not in the rest of the country). 2. The wide body is already there, brakes are already there. 3. I can sell the motor and trans out of this car for max $$$ as buyer can demo in the car. Who knows what max $$$$ is right now. 4. Can sell many turbo only parts, wider fuchs, sport seats, etc. The plan would be to go all out and purchase a GT3 motor. Trans would have to be purchased too. I know it's a lot of $$$$, but it would be a unique car. I'm really looking for a 2200#, 350-400 hp, reliable, ca street legal car that I can take to the track or autocross if I want. I think I'm probably looking at about 60 -75k to do it from where it's at right now. People have said to just go buy a gt3, but it's just not what I have in mind. I do like the cars, but just not what I'm after. So, trade me or buy the 930 or else!!!! Okay, let me know what you think. |

No doubt that the conversion will completely mod the car. Yes, fiberglass and carbon would be a given. Interior would be very spartan and not resemble anything close to a factory car.
If the market can give me close to what I'm asking, then I'll get a cheap donor car and start from there, but if my 930 won't give me 30k, what's the point in selling it and starting with something different that won't be able to be smogged anyway, unless it's 75 or older and that may not be smog exempt for long. Well, it's been what 9 months and no takers on the 930. I think I'm going to go the route of using the 930 for a platform and stick with an air cooled/na something or other. Something more than a stock 3.6 and less than a 3.8. The water cooled dealio is out, too much work and $$$$. Obviously, won't be shooting for 400hp anymore, but would like 300 or so.
I'm going to give it a week or so to sleep on it, then proceed. The two cars that I was wanting to trade with fell through, but gave me plenty of inspiration. Anyone out there that has a nice widebody/na car for trade, let me know before I do the unthinkable. |

You need a 74 widebody so you can do what you want to it without the smog nazi's although I guess you can do the same with your "historic exemption" - but really the earlier cars are simple.

Interesting, lots of response to this with offers to trade and selling outright to non-us folks. We'll see what happens. If it sells great, if I trade it for the right car great. Either way, I'm going to get the car I want. If it doesn't sell, then it comes apart. Now, just have to play all this out again.
