Difference in hood badges?
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two hood badges? They both have the same part number on the back(901 559 210 20), but the one on the right has thicker details and is more convex than the one on the left. The one on the left was never installed and was included when I bought my car. I picked up the one on the right on ebay because I thought it was a cheap price and I might just put it on my tool box or somewhere. Was there a year when they changed designs but not part numbers? Just curious. Thanks.

I have a hood emblem and it has number started at 930, never used, bought it for 30$. This is all metal and very good details.

The 'flat' style was the earlier one in production, and was used through at least the end of '73 production. I don't know for certain that the change was made for the beginning of '74 production ... more likely just a running change when the old parts supply ran out. I believe all '75 models used the later design.
Amongst the 'originality' concours crowd, the early design is a prized item! There is also an issue of authenticity ... there are many counterfeits on the market! Sometimes the 'flat' version is described as less ornate, and the 'knock-offs' are said to be 'too flashy' to be original, as the red filling of originals tended to fade in direct exposure to UV!

The early badges also had a more orange hue to the red parts, which were opaque and not translucid like later models. My '73 has an "orange" badge.

Thanks, George! I thought my 'orange' '73 badge was due to the West Texas sun exposure! And, it is definitely opaque, not the clear 'ruby-red' of the later version. The gold finish on mine is also a more 'frosted' look than the shiny later ones. Pretty hard to confuse the two after you have seen an authentic early version.

FYI, Stoddard (www.*************) sells a nice, good-quality repro of the early flat "orange" crest. It is not terribly expensive either, mid $20's I think.

There are at least 3 'official' different versions of the hood crest seen on 911 models:
The early 'orange' version as mentioned above The post-74 version with the deeper translucent red bars & The 1995 on 993 version The picture below shows the colour difference between the 'orange' & 'red' versions (the orange badge is from Stoddard) |

There is much discussion to be had on the hood badges. There have been many different suppliers of badges for Porsche, and they have all made their own, slightly different badges. Some look the same on the surface, but have different casting markings on the back (despite the same part number).
Indeed, the early badges were orangy, and the later-style ones are more red-translucent, despite having the same part number. Have you guys seen the new silver crest that we are carrying? These are genuine Porsche crests that have been masked and silver-plated after the fact. Price is $69.50 http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_exteri_main.htm -Wayne

Whatever badges you buy, make sure you buy genuine Porsche. A reproduction badge I once had faded out within two years - the red completely washed out, and a new one had to be purchased- spending twice the money.
