79SC spare tire air compressor.

This may be a bit off the wall, but here goes. I have been told that the compressor box/compressor for this SC came in a cardboard box, the whole unit mfg by the Webster Mfg co in Canada for VW. Alledgedly this compressor and box came as standard in some SC the 79 included. Can anyone confirm and does anyone have pictures? Thanks Lynn

There's a small black & white picture of the box for the Canadian-made Webster air compressor (and the instruction sheet, the compressor unit, and the tool kit) on page 45 of the book "The 1974-1989 911 912E & 930 Porsche Authenticity Series" by Mark S. Habb (1995, Beeman Jorgensen, Inc.).

According to the book, an air bottle instead of the compressor was supplied for European cars. It seems that the compressor was stock for North American cars from 1974 when the collapsible spare was introduced (that spare first appeared with '73 non-US cars with the 85 litre tank). From '86, a German-made compressor, the Airmate 8000, was used.

I'll scan the photo tomorrow and post it.

Rod.

This from another thread in the Porsche 924/944/968 Technical Forum.

It would be safe to assume the compressors were the same.

Question about the Portable Porsche Air Compressors

Which one you got depended on your luck, although I'm sure that it varied somewhat by year.

Below is a page from the 1983 dealer accessories catalog that shows the canadian compressor, so they were handing them out at least from 1983. My 951, which was sold at Paul Miller Porsche in northern NJ on March 31, 1988 and probably delivered there sometime in June or July 1987 came with the canadian compressor too, so they were still putting the cream colored compressors into some cars into the late 1980s. The more popular black ones were also being handed out in this period.

If your compressor has a part number that starts with 996, I would imagine that it was added by a PO after 1999.

here's one from 1979:

and another from 1972:

They are date-stamped and the older ones can go for big $$$ to the concours crowd. This NOS one from 1972 was advertised for $1800.

This restored one from 1973 went for $1500.

Many thanks to all for the helpful responses. Been loking for Mark Habb's book. Looks like a good reference item. Lynn
