Crankshaft balancing
Hi gang,
I'm planning to get my crankshaft balanced and rods rebushed/balanced. Just to get an idea of what to expect... how do you guys prepare for this step? Obviously, I will ask how the machine shop wants it, but it's nice to know what to expect from you guys. Do you put your crankshaft parts together for the machine shop, or bring it to them as individual parts? The parts I believe they will need include (** = left as individual part): (1) Crankshaft** (1) Piston w/all rings** (6) Rods w/12 rod bolts** (6) Rod Bearings** (1) Flywheel Pilot Bearing - attached with 3 bolts (1) Flywheel** (9) Flywheel Bolts** (1) Nose Bearing w/gaskets** Am I missing anything here and how should I plan for this step? Thank you. Eric Johnson

HI Eric
crank = clean and dry, no bearings crank pully and bolt/washer, flywheel and old bolts = clean and dry, bearing fitted. rods = clean and dry with OLD rod bolts/nuts, no bearings. are you haveing wrist pin/small end bushes fitted?? if so the best wrist pin from the pistons to hone the bush to, or a new one, do thay have a new on at the shop as a pattern? (1) Crankshaft** (1) Piston w/all rings** and pins in the matching pistons (6) Rods w/12 rod bolts** (6) Rod Bearings** ???? why are thay assembling the rods to crank for you? (1) Flywheel Pilot Bearing - attached with 3 bolts (1) Flywheel** (9) Flywheel Bolts** (1) Nose Bearing w/gaskets** ???????why regards mike |

Hi Eric,
Your shop will want the crankshaft, rods w/bolts, one piston assembly, pulley, flywheel; no bolts, and pressure plate (biggest offender).

Ok... I'm obviously an idiot. Ha. I forgot the pulley and the pin (thanks mike).
I am glad you mentioned the pressure plate (thanks Steve). So it sounds like the shop will never assemble these parts as part of their balancing and will not need rod bearings or the flywheel pilot bearing attached. Here is my revised list: (1) Crankshaft** (1) Piston w/all rings** (and pin) (6) Rods w/12 OLD rod bolts** (1) Flywheel** (No Bolts) (1) Pressure plate** (No Bolts) (1) Pulley (No Bolt)

Eric,
Good list,... ![]() The crank, rods and pistons are all balanced separately and the pulley, flywheel and PP are all zero-balanced. This allows future replacements without requiring total disassembly to maintain proper balance. ![]() ![]()
