More 911SC bonehead questions
Fellow embracers of death,
Me again looking to pit you all against one another with more dumb 911 questions. 1). Air filter, brand? How often? 2). Strut brace, yea, or nay? PO said "nay" for 29 years. 3). Deck lid (motor) adjustments done right? Pops open on bumpy roads. 4). Just how high can I rev 1st before shifting to 2nd (feel free to suggest I buy a Civic, I will not). 5). Just how long can the car sit in idle? She tends to die and won't stay lit there after in as short of the time it takes to check the oil (fyi, it's in the low 50's here). 6). Lastly, any other Porschephiles in the Chico/Paradise area of Northern California? Thanks... |

Ok. I will answer. I have an 80 SC. It is very stock.
1) Whatever Pelican sells. Don't over think it. 2) I don't have one. Do you drive on the track? Autocross? Might be a benefit if you do. 3) Don't know. Mine doesn't open up over bumps. 4) If you want to and you are warmed up, run it up all the way. There is a rev limiter in the tach. You will find it. It is about 7k or so. 5) You need some maintenance here. Mine doesn't do this. 6) I am in Portland. Good luck! Larry |

Thanks Larry...
1). Got it. 2). No racing or autocross, but I'm driving er' a lot harder than the PO. If anything maybe a strut brace would help preserve the life span of the struts? Otherwise the car handles fine w/o. 3). Will figure it out. 4). Why does everyone caution about 1st gear revs? Something like; "just use 1st to get the car rolling." 5). Ok. 6). Has the 2-3 weeks of forecasted rain come in yet? |

1) Lot's of guys will warn against K&N filters. I never had a problem with them. Other than that, they're all pretty much the same. Stay with the OEM and you won't go wrong. 2) I had a strut brace, but really it was half for looks and half for performance. In theory they help, but in practice it's not like you'll notice the difference...especially not on the street. I think the story is that the traingulated brace (elephant) actually works while the other ones are along for the ride. 3) Well if it pops open on bumps then it's not done right is it? ![]() 4) The thing about Revving in first is that you're not going very fast at the top of it so what's the use? Second gear doesn't come easy at 7K either, so you may lose whatever litte speed you gained running the **** outta first. Also....the first gear dogs take the worst beating out of all the gears, so do yourself a favour and get rolling in first (4 grand?) then put it in second and *then* show those little ricer twerps whose boss. Trust me - hard launches and speed shifts don't feel good in a 911 and they *WILL* get expensive. ![]() 5) When you take the oil cap off you open a gigantic vacuum leak into your intake system. Most 911s will stumble when the oil is checked. That said,it shouldn't die so replace all of your consumables (filters, hoses, plugs, wires, cap, rotor), make sure your grounds are good, clean your intake (throttle plate and the part of your intake where the crankcase vent into it) and dial in your CIS. Nobody said it would be easy. 6) I'm in Vancouver and sadly got rid of my SC several years ago.

As for question four, I would think you can rev it as high as you like in first, as long as you let the tranny fall into second without forcing it or rushing. You should of course start driving the car from colde after about 30 seconds of warmup, and you should only use part throttle until the car is warmed up. That gives the engine life. Not forcing your shifts gives the tranny life. If the shift lever slips into gear easily, you can figure you aren't hurting anything. If it is fighting you, and you push it really hard, or just jam it or speed shift, how good is that ?
BTW, almost every hot Honda I have ever driven has had bad syncros in either second or third gear. Fast and Furious is no way to shift. BTW, someone else might be able to help you with this, but I think there is some kind of restrictor in the breather hose for the oil tank. I believe I have heard that they don't always get replaced if the hose gets replaced, and wind up in the trash, IIRC. Someone else might be able to help you with this, I just seem to recall reading it somewhere. SIYF. |
