A look into a 911sc Transmission?
Hello everyone,
I am currently in the dreaming phase of Porsche ownership. One day, hopefully sooner than later Ill be working on and then driving one. Specifically Im interested in 1978-83 models. That being said, I'm curious about the inner workings of the cars, its the least I can do without actually being able to work on one of my own. So here's my question, does anyone have a link to an animation about the actual function of the 915 tranny? Or a least recommended reading material? Thanks, Nikolai |

Maybe someone has, but not me.
However, you can download a copy of the shop manual. Google Porsche 911 shop manual. Any one from 1972 through 1985 will do fine. Go to the transmission section. Look at the exploded parts diagrams, get a feel for the lingo. See what gears are where. Note how skimpy little gear toothed things get moved sideways to accomplish the shifting. But you won't understand this, I'd bet, until you pull one of these transmissions apart. Then you'll see how most of the bits work. But a really good video show and tell, maybe with some animation, might do the educational job. Walt |

Post #24 of this thread may be helpful. Ever had to drive your car w/o a CLUTCH?

It is surprising how small all those parts really are, and how much force they transfer when functioning. I am definitely easier on ALL of my manual transmission cars now after having taken one apart and put it back together. I now double clutch and rev match in all my cars to prolong the life of those tiny parts. Peter Zimmermann's 915 Wiki is a wealth of information too. Thanks for putting that together for all of us 915 nerds Peter!

Pete Zimmermann's 915 tutorial is a great read for the 915 transmission minded. As many know, Pete is the author of the USED 911 STORY... a great book to read also

Looks like Part 7 is up on the 915 tutorial, but not transfered over to the full tutorial side yet. But a great read on the 915.
Porsche Wiki (beta): List All Pages Quick question Pete... How many 915 tutorials are planned? and ... What other tutorials are you working on besides the 915 one? These are great insights. |

Thanks, guys! revmax, Part 8 of the tutorial will include 5/R adjustment, and final assembly of the transmission. Part 9 will end the tutorial with some review and misc thoughts that occurred to me during the writing process. I've been thinking about "How to reseal a brake caliper," and "How to replace an alternator belt." My problem now is that my "hands," my stepson, is starting college this summer and won't be available for this. He doesn't say much but I think that he had a great time doing the trans with me, so we'll have to see what shakes out next.

Let me offer a different tact.
Buy a 915 transmission. You can find a damaged one ‘cheep’. Who cares? This lets you practice. You can collect, make, buy, etc. the necessary tools. With a ‘bad’ transmission, you can see, first-hand, all the issues. With several, you can collect some useful parts to use again. Once you have some skills, you can find a rebuildable core transmission. This you can rebuild to perfection in anticipation of installing it in your future 911. Best, Grady
