69-73 turn signal box schematic
 

Dear Pelicans

I have started down the slippery slope of trying to "re-date" a long hood. I have managed to find most of the bits and pieces, but the one part that will make this project a go/ no-go is the turn signal boxes.

I live in the sticks and shipping fenders (even second hand ones) are proving prohibitively expensive. I know it is a long shot, but does anyone have schematic drawings of a 69-73 turn signal box (the actual metal brackets, not the housing..which I have.) I would like to fabricate new ones that can be welded back to the original fenders. The car will not be a concourse car, so it doesn't have to be authentic, just something that will work. In fact, it will stay a bastard, but just a bit closer to its roots.

I really want to put metal boxes back on the fenders and not go the fibre route. Also, I'm not too concerned about the dimensions etc of the lip at the wheel arch, just the actual mounting brackets for the turn signals and horn grills.

Any help/advice will be appreciated!

I guess what I'm looking for is a diy way of getting this...

Willem, thank you. Will take you up on your offer (will send pm.) Don't think it will hurt to at least try. I see the 65-68 box (part 901-503-038-22) is a rather complicated piece of sheet metal design, where as the 69-73 box (part 901-503-031-23) looks a lot less challenging to recreate.

Maybe I should find some second hand fenders on fleabay and get the seller to chop of the front end before shipping :D

If we can't find an answer, just stalk someone with a concours-quality car and dismantle the front end while they're enjoying a meal out.

Thought I'd better give this short thread I started in 2010 an ending, just in case someone else is thinking of doing something similar. Also,I hate threads with loose ends!

I started with a 69 that had been 'updated.' As mentioned above, I couldn't get second hand brackets so I decided to try fabricate my own. The before shot...

Stripping it down revealed that the original latch panel was still on the car, just repositioned. We were able to repair the hack job at the same time as the rusty suspension pan. Luckily for us, the 'offending customizer' had also left the inner edges of the turn signal box, which proved to be a great reference point with which to start fabricating.

First, I made up a cardboard mock-up to get the dimensions right.

I converted the cardboard to CAD with the help of my brother and had a local company cut the required shape out of steel with a CNC plasma cutter.

Then I hammered in the required edges.

Taping the turn signal assembly and horn grill into the correct position, I 'reverse engineered' the bracket. I used screws initially to keep it in position and then welded it later when everything was sorted.

Im located in Bahrain and backdating an SC. No parts available here and old bits cost a fortune.

Bear911 was kind enough to send me the cad drawings of the parts he fabricated but in the end we used the porsche parts and fabricated the sheet metal extension for the fenders behind the turnsignal lights.
