84 starting issue
My 84 targa did not start the other day. I've been using it as a DD for five years and without any prior symptoms, I hit the key and got the battery, brake, and oil pressure lights on the dash but nothing else, no solenoid click, nothing. Battery is well charged as evidenced by bright lights and all that. When the key was in starter mode (past ignition) I could hear the fuel pump running and when switching to this mode, I could feel the DME relay clicking.
I did a search. I returned to where it was parked with the intention of changing out the DME and when I hit the key before doing anything else, it fired right up and has been running normally since. I confirmed that the battery was fully charged once I got it home. Time from initial non start until it started was about an hour or so. The DME relay presently in the car is about a year and a half old. I am inclined to not change anything yet and see if this problem reoccurs. Suggestions on things to look for, hate to get stranded again. Thanks, Karl |

I would start with the starter.

It's probably the starter solenoid. Was the car hot when it didn't start ? Have you replaced the original starter? If the problem continues I would replace the starter with a high torque starter from pelican PEL-GE-STHT.

Interesting thought, had not really considered that since prior to this event it seemed (sounded) fine and still does. As far as I am aware it's the original 26 year old starter. Great lead, I will report on where this goes.
Thanks Tim, Karl |

bad or dirty ground; bad or dirty connection to starter; or solenoid taking a dump. Clean and check your grounds and connections before replacing the solenoid.

Thanks Stone, no visible issues around the starter connections, but I cleaned them all since I was under there. The one time nature and no after effects is one main head-scratcher.

And to state the obvious, disconnect your battery before cleaning connections on the starter.
